Homemade Ice Cream

I just bought an old-fashioned, hand-cranked ice cream maker and made my first batch of strawberry ice cream, using berries I grow in my back yard.

WOW! What a difference in taste and texture between homemade and store-bought! The hand-cranked ice cream is much smoother, and has a delicious, creamy after-taste. I have sampled every store brand that is sold, and even Ben & Jerry does not compare.

Does anyone else on this board make their own ice cream, and how would you compare it to store-bought ice cream?
I haven't had home made ice cream in years. A late uncle of mine used to make it and I always liked it better than store bought.
Just bought the ice cream maker for our kitchen-aid stand mixer.

Made a wonder chocolate with a custard base and whipped cream.

If you recall my vanilla bean thread from a few weeks ago, I purchased whole beans for some home made vanilla for this weekend.
Sounds good, Snidely.

For homemade ice cream, vanilla extract works pretty well.

What kind of ice-cream maker do you have Paddles? We had a cheap one a few years ago and it sucked. It took forever to make the ice cream...and then it only made 1 pint..and then it was a bitch to clean. I sold it at a garage sale for 50 cents.

It might be fun to have a good model, though.
I liked the old fashioned hand cranked ice cream makers, where you must add ice and salt while cranking.

I have done strawberry ice cream in the past, but my strawberries were too big and virtually froze in the ice cream. If I did it again, I would have mashed most of the strawberrries. I did a homemade pumpkin ice cream one time.
I remember as a small kid, at my grandparents using a hand-cranked ice cream maker with ice and rock salt. I think it as my great grandparents machine that was passed down to my grandmother. a lot of work but great ice cream. Even as a small kid I wanted a turn cranking it. also remember an Apple cider
press.

Don't recall if it tasted better or was better because everyone worked on making it, thanks for the memory.
I love this kind of stuff but have never tried anything as "authentic". A true labour of love I'm sure!!!

I can't quite imagine how anything could be as good as my beloved Haagen Dazs, I'm guessin I'm missin somethin.
Haagen Dazs is a lot cheaper than my homemade ice cream. That is for sure. Homemade ice cream is not a money saver but it's a fun thing for the wife and I to do.
I remember going over to my Uncle Franks, and turning that handle for some ice cream. Thank goodness they had some in the freezer, it took forever to make the stuff. Although, it was some of the best ice cream I've ever had, except for a dairy farm that's nearby. (Young's Dairy)
