Housekeeping is the last I would suspect.

I agree, jobs are hard enough to come by. Why risk losing it for some things you might get $100 or so for?

In this type of incident, wouldn't Security immediately determine who accessed the room from the time they left and returned?

My second question is that since this is an incident of burglary, could they have notified the local police department? They could later contact them for status.

no, they did not have anyone into their room, i asked her if it was possible that maybe the door did not close tightly behind her, and she did not think this was the case...even if this happened another guest is going to go in and rip off the room??? I find this hard to believe, am just wondering what other peoples experiences have been.

I stayed at the IP in Jan 2007 and had the maid leave the door open after she cleaned. Nothing was missing. We were gone from 7 AM to 9 PM on a jaunt to the Valley of Fire, Lake Mead and Hoover Dam so it could have been worse. The door to the room needed to be pulled hard to close properly and she just did'nt pull enough. I called Housekeeping to let them know and they said they would call security if there was anything missing. I told the Supervisor just to let the staff know to that it happened and to watch for it again. I think that the older hotels are more likely to have this happen as the auto door closers get old.

Once I somehow didn't lock our room safe.
Walked in after being gone for many hours.
Panicked when I saw the safe door wide open.
Significant amt of cash, and it was all there...whew!
Housekeeping had cleaned the room during that time, too.
If ever there was a golden opportunity to make a good haul, that was it.

I agree that 99.99% of hotel guests would never walk into an unlocked hotel room and steal something.

Probably some low life opportunistic scumbag trolling for doors that don't latch.

I agree that's probably exactly what happened. When there is no security checking room keys, anyone can use the elevators and wander in the halls. Friends of ours caught two guys doing exactly that in the Flamingo last fall. Both guys had backpacks and were making their way down the hallway, ducking in and pushing on doors at all the rooms they passed. Our friend's were just leaving their room and saw the pair doing this. When the 2 guys noticed that someone else was in the hall behind them they stopped walking, turned their backs to our friends, and started having a whispered conversation. Our friends got on the elevator, and hit the call button to tell them to alert security about the suspicious pair. Half an hour later they saw security and Police walk by them downstairs with the 2 guys, now wearing cuffs. Apparently they each had numerous items in the backpacks that didn't belong to them. Security told our friends that the pair was most likely scouting for doors not fully closed (intentionally or not) as well as looking for rooms with a housecleaning cart outside the open door. They've been known to enter a room and grab anything they can while the housekeeper is not in a position to notice, such as when they are cleaning the bathrooms. Just a couple of good reasons why everyone should use the room safes, and always securely close the door behind you even if you are only going a couple doors down for ice!
Had a laptop taken from my room at the Palms a few years back.
They said only maid service entered the room and did not see her leave with laptop (small Sony Vaio,
that would have been easily hidden under a towel.
Filled out report....called risk mgmt (many times) ....no help and piss poor attitude.
Hard to believe someone would risk losing a job, but there are bad eggs everywhere. Maybe they were quitting anyway.
Security won't show them the tapes. They never do unless taken to court.
Sharlene has an airtight alibi.
Harrahs has cameras in its hallways. I had an incident there several years ago and there is no doubt the hallways are watched and taped. Security responded quickly when my roomate was assaulted while getting ice and they were able to track the guy to his floor and right to his room via camera.
As far as leaving the Do Not Disturb sign out and returning with the room done, its possible anyone walking down the hall could simply remove the sign or flip it over. This passes for humor with some folks.
If the room was locked and a key was used to enter, security can easily check which key it was. Each key has a seperate code on it.
Is it possible there is more to this story than your daughter is telling?
I guess we've been fortunate and never had anything stolen(knock on wood). We always stay in timeshare exchanges tho and i have no idea if that would make any difference or not. We always use the room safe as well.
