Actually that's because the hotels try to cover up any problems that occur as much as possible. That's why unless the news gets a hold of it you won't hear of any suicides or problems in a hotel, they don't want the public to hear negative or information that will show the hotel in a bad light.

Case in point: when they had that novovirus a few years ago it took awhile before the hotels finally admitted that they had a problem. Esp at the Cal, everyone knew about the novovirus and then finally a number of months later the Cal started admitting they had a problem and what they were doing to battle it. They had to admit it because it was giving the hotel a bad rep.

Kev2128, these were basically kids, they thought that by hanging a "do not disturb" sign on the door that nobody will enter their room and so they thought it was safe enough to leave their valuables out in the open. It was an expensive lesson to learn, as most of the people posting know, you never leave your valuables out in the open, but they had to learn it the hard way.

One trip staying at Caesars in one of their petite suites, it was very obvious someone was in our room after we had left. Each evening when we got back, the corner of the sheets and blanket were neatly folded down and chocolates were left on the pillow. Although this happened each evening, we didn't notify the hotel management because we like chocolate!
It's kind of hard to put a laptop in a room safe. I guess your best bet is to leave it with the front desk and get a receipet . I had a watch stolen in Jamaica once but it was my fault for leaving it out. Trip Advisor reviews said they had watches stolen there before. It was a company trip, not my choice of hotel.
Actually, this is not that uncommon. What is common is the room doors often need to be pulled shut, they sometimes do not totally close. That's why there are trolls like the 2 backpack robbers walking trying them like kids pulling school lockers..
And, not surprisingly, when things like this happen, more often than not, it's when people return to their room late at night. Read, drunk.
I've noticed at Wynn housekeeping pulls the cart into the room, shuts the door, and puts a tag in it alerting one to their presence. Some also leave the door open but the cart virtually blocks the entry.
Live and learn.
I was robbed at a blackjack table. Gave the dealer $2500 and before I knew it, it was gone.
