Housekeeping stole two debit cards at South Point.

Last week I stayed at South Point.
On Wednesday, I left my room to attend the Bob Dancer class. When I sat down, I realized I had left my wallet in the room. When the class ended, I returned to find my room cleaned and my wallet moved. I had five hundred dollar bills in the wallet and they were still there, so I assumed all was well.
On Sunday, I check my checking balance and get notified of all sorts of POS transactions. Starting two hours after my wallet was left in the room, there was a $17 charge at a 7-11 less than a mile away, followed by $43 at a CVS across the street and two $109 charges at a Home Depot ten minutes a part. In total, 16 transactions totaling 500 plus. A second card had one $7 transaction but it is set for PIN authorization for a purchase over $10 and was shut off when a second purchase of $17.76 was attempted.
Monday, I called South Point to report the theft to security and they gave me an unbelievable run around, transferring me three times and let's just say the guy who took the report wasn't n my corner.
Forewarned is forearmed. As they say in the Shire.
I've had fraudulent charges on my ATM/Debit card in the past. The bank actually inquired with me about them. They gave me instant credit back, but I had to sign affidavits stating that the charges were not mine. They also put a disclaimer that they would investigate the claim over the next 30 or so days and had the right to put the charge back on. I never had anything happen thereafter.

You should check immediately with your bank to see if they will credit you with the amounts.

By the way, while it was probably housekeeping, your information could have been lifted elsewhere.
I am so sorry this happened to you.
I assume you also contacted the debit card companies (bank?)?
Those accounts need to be closed and you issued new ones, new numbers.

What a pain, though, waiting for the arrival of the cards.

I doubt you get any monetary relief from Southpoint.
Hopefully they will investigate who serviced/entered your room that day.

I'm not surprised they didn't give you much information on the phone.
They are concerned about liability on their part, so they tell us zero, zip, nada.
It would be good customer service if they did at least reassure us they cared.
But that end of the business is more concerned about their butts.

Does Southpoint have safes in the room? That is one absolute I must have in a hotel.
I always call and ask if I'm staying somewhere new.

You cannot be too trusting.
Housekeeping may not be the only hotel employees entering your room. At the Luxor, they used to have that $9 per bottle of water. There were a couple of times that guy came into our room to check on the water.

thx for sharing that info. I am not surprised to hear that they seemed like they did not care. if it were my company I would be investigating them for sure. and you were able to give them a specific time frame, so chances are they have a pretty good idea of who had access to that room at that time. you should be compensated from the property even if your bank already took care of it. the least they could do is give you 2 free nights or so -- that would cost them almost nothing since they have rooms sitting empty anyway. I have had several credit card breaches after some of my Vegas visits. I don't leave my wallet in my room but they are saving my number somehow or using a skimmer. Vegas would be like paradise to a credit card / identity thief.
That would seem to be theft, so perhaps filing a police report would be in order?
My banks are sending me new cards and will refund my money, but it will take time. The one bank is national and was great. The other is a local NY bank and is snail mailing me the forms I need to fill out but I need to bring them into the branch in person. I have sixty days to do that. I called the Vegas Police but they don't do phone reports. I'll fill it out when I get back in a couple of days.
It wasn't my info that was lifted, it was the cards themselves. I accidentally left my wallet behind. My bankroll was in the safe.
You might want to consider the freeze your credit thing with the big three credit agencies....If they got your Driver's license info, they could be working on stealing your financial identity next. Either way you'll want a police report.
If Southpoint had a policy of giving two free nights to each visitor claiming to have credit cards stolen, how many times do you think people would claim to have credit cards stolen? The best Southpoint can do is to keep data cross matching employees with room access with customers making complaints. When they have sufficient evidence, they fire the employee.

I had fraudulent ATM transactions on my Debit Card in Vegas when I was not in Vegas and the bank suggested filing a report with my Local Police Department which I did......It may be a good idea for you to do the same so there is a report somewhere.
