The Huge Responsibility of Owning A Gun

I am a gun owner and glad I am. I will never give up my gun. Having said that let me tell you a true story.

We live in Florida.

Many years ago my wife and I move into "a kind of rough apartment". Our first night there we are exhausted and stressed from the move. In addition all of the commotion outside our bedroom window kept us awake. I guess many of the tenants kept different hours than us. Being cautious I put my loaded 12 gauge Winchester Defender shotgun under our bed. As we tossed and turned my wife says Mike somebody is at the window trying to come in. Sure enough there is somebody at the window removing the screen trying to come in. I now chamber a round and put my site on the window. I then yell out what the hell are you doing. With that I hear what sounds like a 12 year olds voice say "I am sorry, I didn't know anyone was living here".

A couple of minutes later there is a knock on the door and a man and woman are standing there apologizing. They have been without a screen for quite some time and they knew our apartment had been vacated and they had come over to take our screen.

Let me tell you I have carried a gun in my car for over 30 years but until you have to draw down on some one you can't imagine how it feels. This could have turned out horribly and my life and several others could have been ruined over a GDamn screen.

A huge responsibility comes with gun ownership. Sure it makes you tough and evens the score but is it really worth it sometimes. Maybe it is better to walk away or give up your possessions rather than pull the trigger.

When I was 14 a neighborhood boy I knew was cutting through a neighbors yard after a high school football game. He was shot in the head by the home owner who thought he was a prowler. The kid lived another 40 years but he was mentally challenged after that. He recently died after never really having any quality of life. In addition the home owner had to live with the tragedy he caused.

In closing I am glad I own a gun and I will fight to keep them. But you have to ask yourself is it really worth killing somebody over the situation you are in.

In the case of a physical confrontation where my loved ones or myself are in harms way I will drop you in a heartbeat. For all of you crooks, getting in my house will be easy. Getting out will be the hard part.

We all have to keep in mind, even if we are within are rights once you shoot somebody your life will never be the same.

I hope and pray I never draw down on another person as long as I live.
This is excellent, and you are right on with everything said!

Yes, protect yourself if that day ever happens, but only once you know what is going on around you.

If people just did the right thing, we would never have to "stand your ground".

However, some people do not have the capacity to do the right thing, for they only care about themselves, their life, their feelings, yada yada yada.

Wolves among the sheep. Well, some sheeps have guns!

Great pots TUTONOW. I've also thought of actually have to draw on someone and it's hard to imagine, as you say, unless you've actually done it. Thank God, and hope I'll never have to. Again, great story and something every gun owner should give pause and ponder at this point.

J

BTW, I will shoot anyone who comes into my home or threatens my family, they'll have one warning and if they don't take heed, they're gone.

I had a window decal at my old place.

It said, "Intruders will be shot. Survivors will be shot again."

Twice I've had confrontations in/on my property that I felt required me to brandish a weapon.. Twice I've shown I was armed after having dialed 911. I've never had to point-aim at the intruders. Both were arrested. I was living in "rough" areas. I still live in a rougher area than I would like, but it is so affordable. LOL

I will never give up my firearm ownership. I have downsized my arsenal to only one pistol. I also sincerely hope I never have to use it. And, I go to the range at least annually for "practice".

If only more gun owners took that responsability seriously. Years ago I had roomate that bought a sidearm for protection in taking bingo hall deposits (very large) to the bank. I once asked what he would do if confronted. He said he'd blow them away. I asked how many times he'd done that before. He asked what I meant. I asked him how many times he had drawn on and shot someone> Of course the answer was none, but he said he'd had no problem doing it. I knew he believed that, but I also knew it was probably not true. More gun owners get shot with their guns than shoot others. I have no problem with gun ownership, but get some training and know your limitations.

Good Luck!

Just a theory IMHO, by the time we are old enough to own a firearm, we have seen so many shootings at the movies and TV. These shootings are wrapped up in a neat little package in less that 90 minutes. Many people don't realize it doesn't work that way in real life.

For that matter most people have never killed anything bigger than a cockroach. They don't know what it is like to see blood pouring out of a wound and some one taking their last breath, which unfortunately I saw more than once at my job as a firefighter.
I'm a gun owner and am trained. I have never used it for protection, but would not have hesitation to protect myself.
