I-PAD'ers

Great thread Jatki99 !!!!! ....... Thanks for starting it.

I hope I'm not interupting here, but like you I would like to by an "I-PAD", and am also kind of unfamiliar with everything about them.

One question I do have that maybe someone can answer is this;

I'm assuming there are several companies making these tablet-thingies,
and I don't really need all the bells and whistles, just something that will keep me from getting bored when I'm on my 5 1/2 flight to Vegas.

Could someone please recommend a cheaper version (a different manufacturer), that I could buy that seems to be a fairly good product.

THANKS, Rick
I'd get the ASUS Transformer it is hard to find in stock, but you should be able to find it somewhere it is roughly $399.99.

My friends just bought an Android Tablet, not sure what the official name is. IMO, the iPad blows it away, but it also was a lot cheaper.

Second, the ipad can't make a phone call, the iphone can. Third, the ipad can't text message someone, the iphone can. Fourth, the ipad has optional 3G/4G service for an additional cost, the iphone requires 3G/4G services. Also, if you do a lot of typing the ipad uses a "hunt and peck" method unless as someone stated previously that you'd need to get a keyboard. For half the cost it'd be better to go with a netbook and with the money you save you could use it for an unlimited 3G/4G service.

I felt the same way you did and actually gave a friend of mine a hard time asking why he bought an iPad when he has the iPhone?

I now know why. While the phone works great, it's not the same as having a big screen and keyboard. The picture quality is amazing. I don't use my laptop anymore and the portability so portable, fits into a lot of my larger purses.

I-Pads look cool as hell and sound cool as hell, but at the end of the day there are three big strikes against them (for me at least):

1) Too big to put in my pocket

2) Too attractive to a thief to steal, and hard to hide (see #1 above)

3) Not conducive to long periods of sustained typing (which I do a lot of on my job) and therefore not a full replacement for my laptop.

But you I-Padders enjoy!

I'm not sure what you can fit in your pocket other than a phone?

If you like toting around your big ass lap top, more power to ya! I will never go back, my laptop has an inch of dust on it.

I typically carry my phone, wallet, and Ipod touch with me.

My computer stays locked up in my trunk in its case, is only $300, and is much less attractive to a thief. If I'm going to get everything out of an IPad that all these other people are talking about, I can never put the damned thing down. Leaving it in the trunk kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it? And I refuse to be one of those douchebags that walks around with a satchel just so he can carry an Ipad around with him...

Very helpful,thanks MAL

Some pretty smart people have attempted to educate me on this lets see if any of you are better at teaching the technology challenged.

I have always used my desktop for personal stuff (banking etc) for 17 years. (Replaced 4 times)

I have always used my laptop for business for 23 years. (Replaced 5 times)

Now that I am looking at retirement travel I am looking for personal internet mobility. I got a netbook and returned it. Did not like it at all.

Finally the question: Tablet or laptop? What are the differences other than the obvious like price and keyboard?

Another idea that was proposed was wait for the next generation of smart phone? ( I do not have a smart phone, just standard cell)
Couple Options

If you have the money - go with Ipad or the new android powered Galaxy tab 10.1 (I have this one)

If you do not have the money get the Viewsonic tablet - 10.1 for $259.00

NOTE: think about a keyboard (especially if you are sitting at desk and plan on using it for e-mail, typing)
