I-PAD'ers

Generally speaking it depends on how you use it. If you buy a laptop in the $399-499 range it is going to be a low end laptop. The primarily consequence of which is it is going to be slow. It is going to be slow to load Windows, and if you try and run any programs that are CPU intensive it is going to be painfully slow. In the same price range you can get an Ipad, an Android Tablet or if your familiar with and like the Palm webOS you can get an HP Touchpad.

Tablet vs. Laptop: I think most travel/home users are going to prefer a Tablet. Exceptions would be for those that do a lot of document creation, work on spreadsheets, edit photos, edit videos or are PC Gamers. For everyone else the increased portability, longer batter life, less heat generated and being easier to carry will make Tablets more useful and usable for most people .

Tablet vs. Smart Phone: For the most part a tablet is really just a large smart phone that lacks the ability to make calls. However, I find the typical smart phone screen is too small to provide an enjoyable experience watching movies, surfing the web or answering emails. For me the the smart phone couldn’t replace a laptop on a trip, but a tablet could.

Some pretty smart people have attempted to educate me on this lets see if any of you are better at teaching the technology challenged.

I have always used my desktop for personal stuff (banking etc) for 17 years. (Replaced 4 times)

I have always used my laptop for business for 23 years. (Replaced 5 times)

Now that I am looking at retirement travel I am looking for personal internet mobility. I got a netbook and returned it. Did not like it at all.

Finally the question: Tablet or laptop? What are the differences other than the obvious like price and keyboard?

Another idea that was proposed was wait for the next generation of smart phone? ( I do not have a smart phone, just standard cell)

I have the Acer android tablet. I got android so I can play at videopoker.com. Any site that uses flash is not compatible with ipad. I love it. It can have multiple tabs open at once which I dont think the ipad can do. It was 449 I think at staples. The motorola zoom is supposed to be good too but the tech geek at staples said the acer was better. I ahd an acer monitor and it lasted forever. You will really enjoy it. And all I have to say about angry birds is its so addicting. I cant get past level 1-15!
Thanks for all the useful info.

One more question (please/thank you) .........

About battery life; How long do the batteries usually last (long enough for my 5 1/2 flight to Vegas) ???

Are some manufacturer's better with this, or ar they all just about the same.

Rick
The second generation Ipad has the longest at more than 10 hours, and then Galaxy Tab 10 at just under 10 hours, most of the other 10 inch sized Android tablets come in somewhere in the 8 hour range as does the webOS powered HP TouchPad.

I finished Angry Birds but can't get all the hidden/bonus awards. But, my itouch is not acting properly and I reset it losing all my scores.

Paper toss is an excellent app, too.

Thanks Malibber.

Looks like any one of those tablets will give me enough battery life.

My luck, I'll buy one, and then finally fall asleep on the plane. LOL

Did anyone mention the Blackberry I-PAD ? (I'm also assuming that all of these tablets are called I-PADs ???)

So which one should I buy ?

Thanks again Jatki99 for starting this thread.

Rick
Collectively they are called Tablets. The tablets Apple makes are called iPads. The Blackberry Playbook (what they call their tablet) hasn't sold very well nor has it reviewed very well. The only reason to consider one would be that you already have another Blackberry device. Out of all the tablets Amazon sells it is currently ranked number 31. Basically IMO you should start with the premise that your probably going to buy an iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10 and stick with that unless you fall into one of these groups:

Cost is the most important factor: you should probably look at ASUS Transformer or Acer Iconia.

If you need a full size keyboard: If you need the ability use the tablet as a laptop with an upright screen and conventional keyboard the ASUS Transformer with the extra cost docking station is your only choice.

If you already have a Palm Pre or HP Veer: You probably want to consider the HP TouchPad

If you already have a Blackberry: You probably want to consider The Blackberry Playbook
