Compared with leaders of the United states for the last 60 years or so? You must be kidding.

Forky has managed to sink to a new low.

Under the Castros more than 1 million people have fled the country by any means possible. Thousands have been imprisoned & others have been killed simply for opposing the govt. There are no free elections, but forky has the nerve to compare the Castros to American presidents.

I heard they treat gay people real well in Cuba also.......Maybe Forkie should join Michael Moore and move to Cuba.

Oh, you mean like those great folks we supported in Guatemala, Chile, and El Salvador? Not to mention Greece when it was fascist, and Franco in Spain, who was put into power by Adolf Hitler? How about the Shah of Iran, who we put into power by overthrowing a democratically elected leader? And how about the leaders in Saudi Arabia that we currently support?

So what's the difference between our BFFs above and Castro? Castro has a better human rights record, but oppressed Standard Oil and United Fruit Company. Corporate rights have always trumped human rights for the United States.

Forkie, I don't understand your argument. Are you saying that because we've made mistakes in the past that we should do that again?

What past? We have diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia today. People are routinely executed and imprisoned without a trial....all media is controlled by the government....and death sentences are carried out in brutally barbaric ways - like stoning someone to death.

What would you call someone who embraces that diplomatic relationship while crying foul about Cuba? I would call that person a massive hypocrite, wouldn't you?

Diplomatic relations with countries has never been based on approval of their ruling government. You'll here lots of our politicians say otherwise - and they are unanimously guilty of the hypocrisy I just mentioned. Which means they dont believe their own bullshit. In other words - they are trolling for votes or pushing an agenda.

I have to say....but,..I ....don't ...want..... to. Forkie and PJ have a point and I have to lean that way{shudder} HAHA
Did I miss when Saudi Arabia had nuclear warheads pointed at the US from ~100 miles away? Isn't that why the embargo was initially established? Maybe it is time to re-establish relations now, but comparing Cuba to Saudi Arabia is comparing apples and oranges.

No, not results of missiles in Cuba. First sanctions imposed in October 1960--extended in February 1962. Both before missiles were discovered in October of 1962.
Per Wikipedia:

Following the Cuban Missile Crisis (October, 1962), Kennedy imposed travel restrictions on February 8, 1963, and the Cuban Assets Control Regulations were issued on July 8, 1963, again under the Trading with the Enemy Act in response to Cubans hosting Soviet nuclear weapons. Under these restrictions, Cuban assets in the U.S. were frozen and the existing restrictions were consolidated.

So - at least some of the sanctions (like travel) were imposed after Cuban missile crisis.
Ahh, . . . . the United Fruit Company, . . .

Those were the days.
