I survived the Tsunami here in Hawaii!

Overall the Islands were very lucky. There is some damage but nothing in the ballpark of Japan. We have now been downgraded from Tsunami Warning to Tsunami Advisory. Hopefully I'll be back on the beach tanning in another day or two.

I had a back-up plan but luckily never needed to use it. I had built a raft out of unused hotel room/free play offers (because using the offers would be soooooo wrong). I wanted to "go green" so I saved the unused offers up and was able to build a raft out of them. The base of the raft was built with unused Circus Circus offers. I knew my strong morals would pay off one day and it almost saved my life.
They had a local broadcast from Huntington Beach or somewhere near there. The west coast was supposed to be on tsunami alert for around 8am PST. There were photographers and people with their dogs on slightly higher ground. Out in the parking lot near the beach were two cars. The waves were maybe 6 feet? There was no reportable event. I understand they had a major aftershock in Japan.
My sister is on the Big Island but she is on the coast that faces away from Japan so they dont face a threat. I bet there are some good surfing waves though

There have been upwards of 50 aftershocks so far, most of significant size. The event in Japan is far from over. 2 large quakes (6.7 & 5.8) also occurred this morning in the Nagano area.
Back in the US, Crescent City CA certainly had a reportable event. One person is still missing after being swept out to sea by the waves and millions of dollars worth of damage.
Crescent City Harbor Destroyed

Hi,
I live near the beach in Obama's favorite vacation town, Kailua. I had to evacuate my house. I'm sure glad the tsunami waves were minimal. We are still worried about additional earthquakes in Japan so it is possible we might have to evacuate again. Thirteen months ago we had to head to higher ground because of a potential tsunami coming from Chile.
Aloha,
Jennifer

Sorry, but you are mistaken PJ. Tsunami's don't play nice, they can and have attacked from anywhere. Just because your not facing the direction of the wave does NOT mean your safe.
I hope every one in the path is safe.
Yes, the waves actually wrap around the islands. So all sides of the Hawaiian islands were affected by the tsunami. Fortunately there was very little damage reported here.
The Honolulu Star Advertiser reports that a house was pulled into Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island and that boats and piers were damaged at Haleiwa, Keehi Lagoon and Maalaea Harbors. Several Big Island businesses were also flooded. An initial damage estimate for state properties was reported as $3 million dollars. Private property damage was still being assessed.

If you would like to try this for yourself in small scale. Make a square or rectangle box and pour about 1/2" or more of water in it. use a rock about 3" in diameter and place in box away from the edges. Drop a small rock in the water about 3 or so inches away from the big rock. Watch the nice wave you created, if you can't see the wave, add food coloring.
