Poor old DonDiego's been worrying about the safety of the wildlife which abounds around his home on Tomato Ridge. So's he put up a sign on his street to alert motorists to the resident Meleagris gallopavo in the neighborhood.

So far, it's working.

In Appalachia isn't a sign like that considered more of an encouragement to speed up than one to slow down?

A bunch of turkeys is called a rafter. They can also be called a gang but that term is offensive and there is a growing movement to get that term banned.

Hmmm. “Gang” is offensive, but “Rafter” is boring. No problem! I’ve got an idea!!

See that excess red skin hanging from the turkey’s neck in DonDiego’s photograph? Well, since that’s probably typical of turkeys in that area, maybe we should name them “The Appalachian Redskins”.

Isn’t that a wonderful idea??

That "excess red skin" is technically a "wattle", . . . sometimes called a "dewlap".
Definition: dewlap - a fold of loose skin on an elderly person's neck, or the wattle of a bird



DonDiego has no objection to the term "Appalachian Redskins", so long as clcmm intends it as term of honor.

And, . . . perhaps, . . . the NFL team representing the Nation's Capital should be called the "Washington Dewlaps".
