“. . . al Qaeda is on the run and Osama bin Laden is no more.”
__The Obama, 5 October 2012
Presently al Qaeda, in the form of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has run into the late Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit. They plan to run into Baghdad.
As far as DonDiego can determine Osama bin Laden remains dead.
***EDITED TO ADD ***
In response to reader Chilcoot's observation that alQaeda leadership no longer holds ISIL to its bosom, DonDiego adds the following clarifications:
In April 2013 the name of the al Qaeda organization The Islamic State in Iraq (ISI) was changed to The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS/ISIL). It is these rather unpleasant fellows who are presently causing havoc in Iraq.
On 3 February, 2014 al Qaeda General Ayman al-Zawahiri stated that ISIS/ISIL "is not a branch of the al-Qaeda group [and al-Qaeda] does not have an organizational relationship with it and is not the group responsible for their actions.”
DonDiego apologizes to al Qaeda for accusing them of the present pillaging of Iraq, above.
In the future DonDiego will refer to ISIS/ISIL as "a derivative of al Qaeda" to soothe the tender sensibilities of Chilcoot towards any, even unintentional, criticism of al Qaeda.
