If there were an apocalypse, what type of weapons would you want?

I need help with research on guns. I am writing a post-apocalyptic story where an EMP knocks out all the power and motorized vehicles. What type of gun or guns should my character carry to fight off hostiles and hunt for food, and why?

The main character is a 19-year-old female if that helps. Also, she is going to be traveling on foot throughout the story for the most part.

More information is needed. For example- is she in a city where she is fighting on a daily basis or does she only need firepower on a rare occasion. Is she scavanging for food or is there a supply of game animals near. nineteen year old female on her own would be in a shitload of trouble if society breaks down and its mob rule.

She has a secure location in a rural environment with food. However, circumstances require her to travel away from the secure location in search of medication for her injured boyfriend. While she is gone she may have to forage for food. Other characters in the story will be in urban environments and will regularly have to forage for food and practice self-defense.

No, it is nothing like Revolution other than a female lead. That series was set several years after an apocalypse. This story is set in the immediate aftermath. There is nothing like the Monroe Militia yet.

I'd go with an Uzi. It's lightweight and battle proven. Not great for hunting, but what's she really going to be hunting anyway?

I vote for a shotgun pistol, mostly because you are going to hit your target about 100% of the time. Sure, it's unlikely to be lethal round, but you are going to seriously fuck-up anyone in your way. One down side is that the spray will hit everyone in the vicinity, but in an apocalypse, oh well. I suppose her split-second decision whether to risk hitting innocent bystanders (or her boyfriend!) in order to stop a bad guy could be a minor plot point.

A shotgun pistol is useless at distance, but when you're in defensive mode you're not likely to play sniper. It's also smaller and easier to carry than a rifle. And since this is somewhat a fantasy, make it a semi or full auto.

If in a rural and secure environment, then there are likely several types of projectile weapons available. Small and larger caliber rifles, maybe a pistol or two, a couple of shotguns of different guages. Likely also to be decent hunting blades. Probably wouldn't find a lot of uzi's in a rural environment, unless in a rather fanatic survivalist compound. Not a lot of call for automatic weapons out in the country. And that may depend on just how 'rural' you mean. 10 miles outside the city limits of Dallas may be considered 'rural' but that wouldn't be the same type of 'rural' as being 50 miles from Pueblo, Colorado.

The protagonist’s part of the story takes place in South Dakota.
