I also grew up with no cable, so network only, where my dad watched the original Star Trek, poor me. I grew up with PBS kids programming and game shows. My nightly "shows" now are sadly Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune and then I turn it off for prime time. I do love Wayne Brady's Let's make a deal if I happen to be home at that time. Yes, tv is that horrible these days.
Didn't get cable until an adult because it wasn't available until satellites became popular. Then had no cable due to college. So had cable for maybe 10 years, then about 7 years ago went back to rabbit ear antenna when they did the changeover. Spend several months at my mom's a year and she has like 800 channels. I come back to my house renewed that I will never have cable again.
Last year, we started to do the "binge" watching of shows...so far we have made it through one season of Parenthood, stopped, one season of Breaking Bad, stopped, two seasons of House of Cards, stopped, one season of the Network, stopped, two seasons of the Good Wife, stopped, etc...did like Rectify, two seasons, awaiting....watched the Americans, awaiting...begrudgingly watch Mad Men, but only like Don Draper storyline, but I hate the rest of the show. Sadly, the last show I "loved", I know very stupid, but Chuck and Blair on Gossip Girl are the best two characters even written on tv. But I watched this in real time, I think bingeing removes an element to the shows. Once a show goes unrealistic, I just can't watch...I guess the rich elite of nyc is so unrealistic that it is actually believable. I usually get through about 3 episodes before something goes sour for me. I did like the Big Bang Theory weekly, but haven't watched it lately.
As for channels, I remember liking Discovery and TLC because they had these completely weird medical bios named very weird things....I am my own twin....I was pregnant for 39 years, etc...the names would catch my eye when trying to find something to watch on my mom's 800 channels. They were always interesting and educational...the twin one, she had morphed her twin into her body and had two dna's....and the pregnant one became a stone baby tumor when it didn't abort in a third world country.
I am taking recommendations...would love to watch a really good tv show again one day, lol.
And yes, once football is on, that is all that is on our tv.
