The Impossible Question

Hit a royal! I'm doing great! Hit a royal and I'm up $800!

My day starts after I get out of bed, watch some Maury "you are NOT the father" Povich", shower and shave. But, more importantly, that is when my wife's day starts. She gets annoyed with anal, pedantic each calendar day begins at 12:00am talk. No, she's say, we went to bed at 1am. From 12am to 1am counted as last night.

Although, my wife would be making conversation if she asked me how I was doing and would not expect some sort of 12am to 12am win/loss statement. Actually, though, my wife is with me 98% of the time in Vegas so she would already know how I was doing.

This is not YOUR spouse. Your only goal is to give as accurate an answer as you can. List your result for the Day, not the trip.

The gambling day officially starts when you wake up in the morning and runs until you next climb into bed. Naps don't count.

My response would be "Honey...You've changed so much, I just don't know you anymore."

Leaving the spouse out of it, the total I put in my log for today is $800.

Yesterday, or actually this morning at 4am, before going to bed I would have recorded the final -$600 in my log and closed out the day (the earlier -$200 would have been recorded before dinner). I would not even try to figure out where I was in the middle of a session when midnight happened. Even a new session between midnight and bed would be recorded as the previous date (my electronic log would default to the correct date and I'd backdate it). Anything after closing out a day is a new day to me.

I would not close out a day before taking a nap. If that nap ended up lasting through until my normal get up time for the next day, then I would start day three in the log.

Is this more the answer you're after?

Outstanding! Yes.

So for you, sleep signals the end of your day, so long as it is not declared "a nap" in advance of taking it. Duration of sleep is apparently also irrelevant.

It is neither for me to agree or disagree. I am confident that you are the world's foremost expert on how you think.

More like this one folks.

In your original post, your significant other asks, "How are you doing TODAY in the casino?" In his/her mind "today" must mean the calendar day we currently find ourselves in. By definition, each calendar day begins at 12:00am. If you are looking to answer this question truthfully, you must calculate and take into account all gaming activity that occurred after midnight. I am assuming this is why you've clearly stated all gaming results before and after midnight.

So, the response should be,

"Today I am up $400, honeybee."

Also an excellent answer. So you would break up the results of a continuous six hour play on a single machine, just because the clock ticked past a certain number at a certain time. Fascinating...not being condescending! That really is fascinating.

I doubt if you are alone in this particular method of mental book keeping. Only more answers will tell us if this is the most common view point.

If you were from another time zone, would you go off local or your home time zone?

I typically switch over to local time sometime during the flight. So it's local for me.

We have our first consensus across three forums. Thought you should know. In the other post that agreed with your sentiment, they emphatically stated that even if their nap was longer than their "sleep", "naps" don't count.

So here's your follow up question. If time duration is being discounted, what constitutes a "nap" and what constitutes "normal sleep". Is the only difference the mental declaration that you make to yourself before putting your head on the pillow?

A. Sleeping: wearing sleeping clothes or naked vs Nap: street clothes.
B. Sleeping: Shower, shaving or other hygiene tasks. Nap: an Altoid and off you go back to the action.
Ladies and Gentlemen: I must have missed something. What is this all about? Thank you.

I thought it was like a joke, you know, with a punch line. I'm waiting.
