Ladies and Gentlemen: I must have missed something. What is this all about? Thank you.

I thought it was like a joke, you know, with a punch line. I'm waiting.

It is a thought experiment intended to reveal differences in how people perceive time and partition it into discreet slices according to very subjective factors.

It is of course relevant to how people define "winning" over segmented time frames?

It is going well! Sorry, for once I was being serious. No joke. Just thought provoking data acquisition.

To Mr. Kneeland: Is this for your next book? If so, why it is important? Is it part of a strategy about long term compared with short term goals or play, or is it about timing about when to start playing a progressive? Or is it about Mr. Singer's strategy where he says we are all short term players? And, are you trying to show that all measure our play differently?

Probably no next book. At least not one on gambling. I wanted to do a book on science facts you were taught in school that have since been refuted. Not related.

Yes, this is related to long vs short term goals. I was wondering if people's perceptions of time were different. It appears they are.

No, it has nothing to do with progressives.

Yes, it may indeed come in handy when I begin doing the RS evaluation. Or it may not?

If one knew the answers to research in advance of doing it, there would be no point.

My gambling career has left me with a lot of holes in my knowledge about how recreational gamblers think. I am trying to play catch up and fill them. In closing, I was not "trying to show" anything in particular. I had no idea how people would respond to the question. I think it is very interesting that such a simple query as "how are you doing today?" could have so many answers.
My answer...... "You're as beautiful as the day I met you", the push her on the bed and go at it for an hour.

It is an interesting study in how gamblers think.

So for you, sleep signals the end of your day, so long as it is not declared "a nap" in advance of taking it. Duration of sleep is apparently also irrelevant.

It's not so much sleep, but rather the daily routine, which happens to include sleep. My "day", as a tourist in Vegas, starts off with getting up, showering, dressing, getting money from the safe, grabbing phone, iPod, book, etc, and heading out. My day ends when I drag myself up to the room, empty out my pockets, plug my phone into the charger, toss my dirty clothes into the dirty clothes corner, and crawl into bed with a book or iPad.

Everything in between is part of my "day". I will usually go back to the room a time or two during the day to rest and regroup. I may even take a nap if a buffet was recently attended. But I don't do my end-of-day and start-of-day routines, even if a nap was longer than intended. Any wins and loses between the start and end of my day get logged on the calendar date that started the day. My "day" typically runs from 1pm to 4am Vegas time, which is about 6 hours later than my normal east coast schedule, making it very hard to readjust back to my normal schedule when I get home.
You should never count your winnings (or losses) before trip is done! Bad Karma!
if you go to the hotel room after 1130pm the day is over....but it is really irrelevant because the reaction to the question will be generated from an overall understanding of the current situation. Honestly for the day you are up 800, but you must temper the enthusiasm with the beating that was the day before. All she will hear is you are ahead if you answer +800, which isn't reality for the trip. I don't think gamblers think in day to day, they think in start of trip to finish of trip.....the rest is just white noise and determines how many trips to the ATM are required. You already said it was budgeted for so the day to day only sets the agenda for the next part of the trip.

This was one of the best answers I've received, since it is representational of yet another way of thinking about the situation, and describes the justification in detail. Thank you for taking the time.
Based on the data points provided. I would tell her "I'm up $800 for the day". My day starts with my awakening from the night's sleep. (Or Day's sleep if you work shift work). The chronological time is irrelevent.

That being said, I was in a casino last night and arrived home at 5 AM this morning. I had a net loss of $2,000. I told my wife I lost $2,000 Even though before midnight I had a net loss also, though not nearly as much. I count my "Gambling day" as he session that started at 5 PM yesterday and ended at 5 AM today. Irregardless of the calender day starting at midnight.
