Interesting Development Over At The LVRJ.

I try to read the Las Vegas Review Journal 3 to 4 times per week, and once in a blue moon, I will comment on an article. Lots of info on Vegas and Nevada happenings at the LVRJ website.

Read an item this morning, and scrolled down to see the comments section, and this was posted:

"Due to an increase in uncivil behavior and dialogue the Review-Journal has temporarily disabled the comment boards. The Review-Journal will use the time to evaluate the effectiveness of the comment boards and find an appropriate time to reintroduce them to reviewjournal.com."

This does not surprise me. Lots of flame wars were happening, and there was a tremendous amount of flagging posts just to be an asshole, not because the actual post offended anyone. And from what I could gather, multiple usernames for the same person was also becoming a major problem over there (sound familiar?).

They will probably keep the comments section dormant for a month or two....and hope the troublemakers will go away.....altho that will probably not work.

What ever happened to reasoned civil discourse ?
DonDiego asks "What ever happened to reasoned civil discourse ?" - Just a little thing that has been misinterpreted called the First Amendment.
Dr, the First Amendment applies to the government not limiting free speech. Unless the LVRJ is a government run newspaper, your First Amendment argument doesn't apply.

have you ever read an article on the internet that DOESN'T have a million inflammatory comments afterwards? I don't care if an article does nothing more than offer up a meatloaf recipe.... you can bet it will be followed up with a million bitch-comments about YAHOO, or the government, or minorities.

What is the legal liability of the paper if some nut gets offended by someone's post and hunts them done? Every company in the world is now more concerned with these liability issues then ever before due to the litigious nature of our current society.

It is amazing how brave people become when they can hide behind a keyboard.

That's friggin stupid. NOBODY arguments about meatloaf recipe's. You damn liberals think everyone should get free meatloaf. 59.93421% of all meatloaf eaten in this country is supplied by the government anyway so why would anybody cook their own?

A lot of sites put these comment systems up never realizing it will take several employees working 24-7 to manage them. The moderation is also very easy to game for determined individuals.

That is a shame. I enjoyed reading the comments, they were often more entertaining than the article. I agree it has gotten out of hand . I don't have an answer but it seems people have gotten just plain MEAN on the internet. It is perhaps that facelessness they hide behind but I think it is spilling over. People can no longer disagree politely or see/listen to the other persons side of the discussion.
