Is it just me or are you okay with $150+ per night room rates?

I avoid Friday and Saturday nights in Vegas to avoid paying for rooms. I get comped rooms at the Orleans and Goldcoast Sun-Thurs, plus the casinos and Vegas in general are less crowded.

I think the best value in Vegas are the 2nd floor suites, at the El Cortez. The only drawback is they are walk-ups. Not the ones towards the coffee shop, but the staircase opposite the craps table. Its been years since I paid for a room in Vegas. If I cant get a weekend comp, I just shoot down to Laughlin.

Next time we go to Vegas, , we plan on hitting Laughlin for at least a few days or probably more. The place sounds really appealing, slower pace and all plus the river and beach at Harrah's(that is the one that has a beach right?). We can probably get comped at least a few nights and probably the rest if I gamble a bit which I will. Is Harrah's the best place to stay?, as I said, never been. While Vegas definitely still holds the appeal for obvious reasons, finishing the trip slowing down for a while sounds extremely appealing. Are the odds better down there? or are they as tight as Vegas(definitely one of the reasons Vegas has lost a bit of appeal to me).
Harrahs Laughlin is beginning to show its age. I stay because I get free rooms, but dont give them a lot of play. Machines are tight, pay table for VP is bad, except for a very few machines. They have a carnival game called high flush which is a no brainer. Everyone gets dealt seven cards and you make your best possible flush. You play against the dealer and there are sidebets . If you manage to pull a four card straight flush, it pays pretty big. I saw a guy pull a six card flush that included a four card stright flush and he won about two grand.
I think the best VP is at the Aquarius. Both the Pioneer and Riverside have SD blackjack ,starting at $5.
Harrahs has the beach, such as it is.
Dont go to Laughlin in the summer. Its twenty degrees hotter than Vegas and is unbearable. October to April. Not the summer.
Lots of interesting day trips out of Laughlin. Oatman is about forty minutes, Havasu is a bit over an hour.
Laughlin is a good idea. If I ever get into a dilemma again where I'm stuck having to pay $150+ per night in Las Vegas, I would consider Laughlin as an alternative as a place to sleep. Although it would be an extra 1.5 hour drive each way, Laughlin's room rates are about half that of Las Vegas on a Friday or Saturday night ($60-$80). Also, I just used hotels dot com and in Jean Nevada the rooms there are also about half the rate of Las Vegas. They have Gold Strike, Buffalo Bills, Whiskey Pete, and Primm Valley Resort ($65-$89) for Friday/Saturday nights. The drive time is also less at approximately 1 hour drive from Las Vegas.

Hotter than Vegas!? Is that possible? OK then, point taken there, thanks.

I had the biggest single win of my life on the high flush game at Planet Ho. First ever time winning $500 dollar chips all on like a 3 dollar bet (or whatever minimum is) with a couple bucks on the side bets. I got dealt 6 clubs with five of them ,or whatever, being a five card straight. I won $1700 and change on it. I pocketed those purples right away and gave 'em to my wife shortly after to put in the safe. I think 500's are purple anyway, I'm not that used to drinking anymore so I was buzzing pretty well after a few beers. One helluva a win and first time ever playing it, never even heard of it. Actually I think I remember the pit boss saying it was new and they were just introducing it at PH to see how it would go over.
Nice hit jatki99!
I think two nights in Laughlin are plenty. Staying two nights give you a full day where you're not checking in or checking out. A day on the river. But there is very little to do in Laughlin except gamble. And there isn't a restaurant that would crack the Top 50 in Vegas. It would be hard for me to be so close to Vegas and all it has to offer by comparison.

Thanks, it was pretty cool. I do remember not really knowing what I had and the dealer had to help me (as well as most at the table) to figure out exactly what I had and the payout. I know in retrospect, either she wasn't really sure what was going on either or she purposely shorted me 'cause I was allowed to increase one or a couple of my bets. It would've resulted in a higher payout than what I got. Of course I gave some back but not those 500's, cashed those out when we were leaving, paid for the trip plus a coupla extra duckets to stick in my pocket.
I spend about ten days a year in Laughlin, broken into two, sometimes three trips. If you enjoy cars, you can spend hours at Don Laughlins two FREE car museums.
Just wandering around the Riverside Casino is like solving a maze. The cars change every few months so its always fresh. I try to hot the semi-ghost towmn of Oatman each year, and if you are a flatlander like I am, driving Route 66 from Kingman to Golden Shores is like a real life slot car drive. I've never seen more corkscrews and switchbacks on a road. I can only imagine how those migrants felt, driving that road in a 1930s truck with no power steering and everything they loved and owned in the back. I'd recommend taking one of the one hour cruises. Laughlin has a very interesting history and the cruise narrators tell it wonderfully.
While not a top Vegas eatery, The Hickory Pit at The Edgewater is a great steakhouse at about sixty percent of Vegas prices.
