Is this stealing?

I am surprised that no one made a comment about the maid who would accept a tip to give extra toiletries directly from the cart. Is a maid allowed to do that? After all, where does the tip money go? Into her pocket no doubt, which means she converted company property to benefit herself.

Now, if maid service got a call from the room, and the maid delivered extra toiletries to the room and was tipped, that would be OK in my book.

Now before you jump all over me, don't tell me Im prejudiced against maids or I have it out for the working class. Remember, Im the guy against double booking of hotel rooms so maids don't get that tip income.

.

The tip was given after the customer requested and received additional toiletries that are free for hotel guests. It was to reward the maid for her great customer service not some tawdry conspiracy to defraud the hotel.

It would be different if you palmed her a 10 spot in anticipation of her handing over something that belonged in the honor bar....but while we're at it, let's discuss the morality of the $20 trick.

ooooh.... the infamous $20 trick.... wow!!!!
The housekeepers are instructed to throw out any of these items left in the room. Tampering is the MAIN concern here. What if, just as a gag, someone put Nair in one of the shampoo bottles. The next person washes his/her hair and half of it, or more, falls out. Can you spell L A WS U I T!!!! I knew you could.

Take them home.

As for the $5.... that's just plain cheap.

Just recently we got sent a care package to Iraq with soaps from SEVERAL casinos, to include Trump, HET and some Hilton Las Vegas. We got shampoo, conditioner, lotion and soaps; liquid and solid.

The Soldiers LOVED IT, because lotion especially is scarce.

These did not come from the hotels themselves.

Thanks to those who did send these items, I guess I never thought of it as theft, but these particular items certainly went for a good cause, stolen or not.

Let me clear the air here. No one is commiting theft when they take the supplies in their own room. I offered example A (taking leftovers from your own room) only to present the difference from example B (taking extras from the maid only to bring them home) as a point of discussion.

I take my leftovers home too.

I was told by a few hotel exec's. that all the goodies in the rooms are supposed to be removed as said above.
The risk is not worth it.
As far as asking for more items knowing you are taking them home, I would hope you are not doing this with suitcases in hand walking out of your room. In that case, I can't imagine anyone so bold and cheap to do that.
After I get in my room, the first time I spot a housekeeper in the hall I will approach her with $5 and ask for more.
Yes, I take home what i don't use. My local casino gives me suites with 2 bathrooms, double the goodies I say!
I also have a feeling the upper class hotel that advertise quality items encourage you to take them. It's the little things that can bring you more and repeat business.

In some cases, when there are "branded items" in the hotel rooms, the hotels have actually sold "concession positions" to these brands so they can place their goodies in your room. You dont see this too often today, but if ever you see a branded bottle of mouthwash or shampoo this is what happened... the brand "bought" the placement in the hotel. its a marketing gimic to convert new customers.

ever wonder how "caesars cologne" founds its way to stores?

and in some cases, the companies manufacturing the branded products will sell their products to the casino at a discount so that the casino will advertise the brand. for example, we use xxx mattresses, or xxx HDTVs.
Here is an interesting article on the subject of brand name items in rooms
This too is a good read, I C & P'ed from this link.

Things You Can Take Home From a Hotel
By:Joshua M. Smith

Now-a-days most of the good hotels remain fully-packed with modern-lifestyle accessories. Not only luxury goods, these hotels also offer necessary items to their staying guests. So, in recent times boarders do not require to carry any accessories to their hotel rooms. They are provided with lots of amenities and in-room facilities. In fact, if the boarders want, they can also take some of the room equipments while returning their home. Some of the hotel room accessories that can be taken home without being called a bad guest are mentioned below:
Hotel soaps, hotel shower gel, shampoo and body lotion
In the hotel rooms boarders will find a variety of soaps. Sometimes, it may happen that you do not require all the soaps that you are provided with. In that case, you can take some of the soaps of the hotel to your home. This act of yours not only make the hotel owners happy, but they will feel proud that their branding is being displayed at their customers' residences. The hotel owners will also be delighted knowing that, whenever you will wash your face you will think of your stay at that particular hotel. Usually, it is preferable to take bathroom amenities to home. This is because these items can not be reused by others. So, instead of throwing out these toiletries, it is better to carry those things to home.

Slippers
In good hotels, often terry-cloth slippers remain available. Sometimes on these slipper, hotel names are being embroidered elaborately. This is indeed a great marketing strategy, because each time you wear it, you can see the name of the hotel. While returning home, you can always take these slippers with you. The slippers will give you comfort and will also keep on reminding you about the pleasurable staying experience at that particular hotel.

Other things
Shone-shine kits, note paper, logo pens, stationery, envelopes and post cards are some other items, that can be taken home from hotel rooms. Thus, without being considered a bad guest, you can make the full use of extra accessories offered by a hotel.
