They just charge the persons credit card when the loss is discovered, or sue them if the card can't cover the loss.

Really Bagiant? I wonder how the follow up story goes:

Version A. Guest posted a cash deposit, it was returned at check out, the loss was discovered 4 hours later.

Version B. "Hello, American Express? How the hell do they think I walked out of their hotel with a big screen TV?" "You're right sir, sounds a little weird doesn't it, we'll remove the charge."
