Normandy is one of the few areas of Europe I've experienced where having a rental car really pays off. Yes, there are tours, but we had a very successful trip by grabbing our own guidebooks, a GPS, and heading out on our own. We stayed at a Novotel in Bayeux, I thought it was ideal for car tourists like us.

In addition to the must-see beaches, I recommend touring the drop zones around St. Mare Eglise. There were lots of chaotic battles on that peninsula, and it really is something to imagine what went on in those fragile first hours before battle lines hardened. Go off the beaten paths, you'll see lots of battle scars remain. I particularly enjoyed seeing the site of the Brecourt Manor Assault dramatized in Band of Brothers

Lastly, be sure to visit the American Cemetary, but don't miss the German Cemetary at La Cambe. Seeing both really drives home the slaughter that came to people both good and bad when their leaders failed them.

Wow! Thanks for taking the time to give me all the details. I really appreciate it!
Duly noted.
HBO's The Pacific brought it home too.
God Bless my Big Babe- he was 88 going on 89 when I lost him- told me stories of being there on our bus rides to AC. RIP and thank you

This is the time of year I really miss my Grand Father. I had learned that he was apart of Patton's army and my Uncle has a picture of Grand Pa sitting on a brick fence on the border of Germany.
