Little League has one (Major League age group) tournament, culminating in Williamsport, PA. Some may argue that there is a series of tournaments leading up to the World Series, but it's really just one huge tournament. Little League baseball in my hometown is quite strong, and Brownsburg sent a team to the that competed in Williamsport with Danny Almonte.
The all star teams can play as many as 20 tournament games, while other teams will play as little as 3 games. Those early losers often play non-Little League sanctioned tournaments once their LL season is complete.
New Albany Indiana beat Brownsburg (my team) in the Indiana State finals in 2014. That New Albany team, in turn, lost to Jackie Robinson in the Great Lakes Regionals, which is held in Indianapolis. I've watched many games there.

The postseason travel team that you refer to (comprised of Little League players) are independent of the Little League organization. Those coaches can set up any rules that they like.

On Long Island, the travel team is composed of players from the All Star Game. We have a game with about 15-20 players on each team and from that, they cull a team of about 20 players to represent the league in the tournament's. Not to be confused with the elite independent teams.
You are mistaken. The postseason tournament teams are the ones that end up in the LLWS if they advance.
Not that long ago, Mineola hosted the NY State tournament, with the team from Washington Heights advancing to Pennsylvania on the arm of a phenom named Danny Almonte.
