Modern reactor design and the design of this particular Japanese reactor pretty much preclude a Chernobyl-type disaster and, most particularly, a China-Syndrome meltdown. At worst there could be radiation release similar to that at 3-Mile island, PA - which required substantial assistance from human-error itself. And where no one died. And even that is unlikely.

DonDiego suggests one need not panic.
If the reader would permit, DonDiego would like to alter his previous comments, as follows:

DD, only the outer most part of the reactor building has been effected so far. The reactor chamber so far is undamaged.

Hey Forkush- how come there's no looting in Japan?
The social safety net in Japan is much better, for example pensions and public health insurance is much more prevalent. The gap between the wealthy and poor doesn't compare with the U.S. - here wealthiest 400 people have as much money as the bottom 50% of our population. And social inequality is much less in Japan; they don't pay for public schools with local property taxes for example, so there isn't as much disparity in educational quality between poor and rich neighborhoods.

On the other hand, under Japanese law, taxpayers, not the corporations running the plants, may have to pay for the nuclear cleanup. In that instance, I would call the corporate owners "looters." Much worse than snagging a loaf of bread, huh?

Wow! So when the people in South Central riot, they're all the while thinking about health plans and pensions! Thank you- you've really opened my eyes!

Oh come on Forkie, why don't you tell the real truth.

Their society like many other asian societies is more of the what's best for everyone as a whole not particularly what's best for me. You don't have sectors of people that think that government OWES them for this or that. Looters in this country think the government owes them stuff and anytime they can get anything for free, they are taking it. Why do you think those poor folks in New Orleans were taking big screen tv's when there was no power to even watch them? I could see food if they didn't have any, but alot of the stuff they couldn't cook nor did they even have the power to use them.

Just so. As best poor old DonDiego recalls there was no meaningful damage to the reactor chamber at Three Mile Island.

However, there was a partial core meltdown.
Today the fuel rods at Fukushima Dai-ichi Unit No.2 were fully exposed. And Japanese officials have announced: "The nuclear fuel rods inside all three of the most troubled nuclear reactors at the quake-ravaged Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant appear to be melting."
DonDiego hopes the reactor vessel in Japan works as well as the one in Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station Unit No.2 did in 1979.
This guy gives a detailed synopsis. Hopefully he's right:

Exactly what I've been hearing!! Sometimes Wikipedia does explain things quite quickly. Remember, the Russian reactor didn't have the same safeguards as this plant.
