Joe Paterno and President Out at Penn State

He is a bit like the Catholic Bishops in that he didn't do anything to keep Sandusky from molesting more kids or restrict his access to kids. He could have banned him from campus and removed him from team involvement, but as I understand it he continued to have access to campus and served the team in some sort of unofficial capacity. Not only that but the whole thing with the undergraduate student that reported the incident smells really bad. Normally you wouldn’t start a coaching career at a major university like that. It seems like he was paid off with a paid coaching position for not pushing the matter.

First off I have been a Penn state fan for over 25 years and was totally shocked when the story broke. There is nothing that can be said to make any of the actions right. However the biggest thing I see wrong is the way they are treating this story. Every time the pictures come up they show Joe Pa (he should have reported this matter to authories) where in fact they need to be plastering Jerry Sandusky's face all over the TV screen. He is the guy who caused this entire disgrace to PSU. As I sad I feel for the victims but Joe Paterno does not deserve his picture posted everytime the issue is brought up in the media. Sandusky deserves and I truly hope he get all he deserves for his horrible conduct. Sandusky is one sick ass puppy and should pay dearly for his acts.

They're showing Paterno because he IS the program ... he is PSU. With fame and fortune comes responsibility, which is something "fans" forget. And he reputedly was an educator, first and foremost. He forgot that. His apologists forgot that. Lastly, we assumed he was a human being. Joe Pa is NOT Sandusky. He needed to be bigger, better than he was, however.

Go watch the ESPN Film that's presently running, "Roll Tide/War Eagle," if you want to see what's wrong with big-time sports and "fans." And that comes from a big fan of a number of sports.
Not as much file photo on Sandusky.

Well actually here is the problem. This will most likely fall under a mandatory reporting situation. I guess it depends on what the rules where when this happened. But telling your superior DOES NOT comply with mandatory reporting. Each person that heard about this, whether a rumor or not, was to report it to the proper county/state authorities. You don't get a pass when you just tell your boss. If that is the case they are all guilty of not reporting in a mandatory reporting situation.

That's the whole issue. What are the rules here and to whom do you report violations to for each particular situation.

What about this other coach that didn't report what he saw to the police? If Joe gets fired for reporting it to the AD and not the police, what about this guy? Double standard?

For the Joe Pa apologists, a great line from Phil Taylor in SI this week. Many of us have been saying the exact same thing, maybe this will sink in:

"That is not the way a pillar of the community behaves. Paterno is not some middle manager who came upon a problem beyond his pay grade and reported it to his boss. Joe Paterno has no boss. He is the face of the university, the most powerful and, until now perhaps, the most respected man in Happy Valley."
Just like I have posted prior.

How many of you could be witness or told of an employee that is abusing kids sexually and you don't go to the police! WTF is wrong with people? You do what is RIGHT!
All of them have to be fired period! Joe is not innocent in this frickin mess! He is the CEO!

Have we all lost our "moral compass"?

Joe is not the CEO. (more likely a VP or a division head)

The President of the University is the CEO as he/she runs the WHOLE show.

Rd, there are a few things we don't know. Had this perp been reported to the police before? By police, are you meaning the campus ones or the real cops?

I repeat, I do NOT condone the actions of Joe Pa or anyone else involved in this.

There are questions that I have which have not been answered by the media frenzy.

Why did the person who SAW the abuse, not report it to the police?

What was the EXACT series of events, and what specifically was/was not done?

What are the Universities rules on reporting sexual abuse?

What are the NCAA's rules on reporting sexual abuse?

What are the rules for reporting a crime on campus? Any of you college grads remember what the rules were when you were in school?

The assistant coach that saw the conduct is saying he did talk to the police after the incident. In an institutional setting most reporting laws require you report this kind of stuff to a supervisor if you are a mere employee. The law is set-up to protect the (business) not the kids.

The bigger question is why did the university police, local police and others involved in the university sweep all this under the rug? If you want to be fair about it a full house cleaning is in order including local law enforcement.
They should put Sandusky in the same cell as Charles Manson.
Who the phuck cares what their legal obligation was. I, you, them, everybody has a MORAL OBLIGATION that trumps everything else.
Paterno and his coachs are supposed to take boys right out of high school and turn them into successful men, both on and off the football field. They failed to protect the weakest amongst us. If you fail in that, you fail in life, no matter how many National Championships you win or how much you earn.
