Apparently you have never worked in a large organization where reporting through the chain of command is god and otherwise your job is gone. Do you have bills to pay and a family to feed? If not, call the cops right away, and kiss it all goodbye. An if you do report through the chain, it is a cold day before you learn of any actions taken beyond the thank you for reporting this.

I just wonder how much hush money has been paid to some of the parents since 1999?

Paterno and his coachs are supposed to take boys right out of high school and turn them into successful men, both on and off the football field. They failed to protect the weakest amongst us. If you fail in that, you fail in life, no matter how many National Championships you win or how much you earn.

BINGO, RIGHT ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But, we have so many on hear making excuses about "chain of command"or trying to defend Joe. That is just bullshit when it comes to the abuse of a child! PERIOD

The assistant coach that saw the conduct is saying he did talk to the police after the incident. In an institutional setting most reporting laws require you report this kind of stuff to a supervisor if you are a mere employee. The law is set-up to protect the (business) not the kids.

The bigger question is why did the university police, local police and others involved in the university sweep all this under the rug? If you want to be fair about it a full house cleaning is in order including local law enforcement.

Question is were they even informed of the issue? As you stated, they have a chain of command so to speak they have to follow if the want to keep their jobs.

Of course those that have never been in a very large organization, don't understand this at all.

Never been in the military or worked for a government agency before rd? Want to keep your job or get promoted, you need to play by THEIR rules, period. Go against the grain and make waves, enjoy your dead end position, with no or a very bad recommendation when you get the boot out the door. This IS a realistic idea of what happens out there in very large companies. Why do you think the folks in DC ever came up with the whistleblower protections? Not because people talked too much, just the opposite.
This is nonsense. When you see a crime being committed, you don't have a chain of command. you call 911. If there you see a fire, you don't notify your superior, you call 911. If you come across a rape, you call 911. Chain of command, my ass.
Anyone who sees a kid being raped and worries about a future promotion before taking action is beyond contempt.

There is nothing in the Uniform Code of Military Justice that tells a person to not report a crime in progress to the proper authorities, which in the case of a sexual attack would be the police.

Just like I have posted prior.

How many of you could be witness or told of an employee that is abusing kids sexually and you don't go to the police! WTF is wrong with people? You do what is RIGHT!
All of them have to be fired period! Joe is not innocent in this frickin mess! He is the CEO!

Have we all lost our "moral compass"?

Joe is not the CEO. (more likely a VP or a division head)

The President of the University is the CEO as he/she runs the WHOLE show.

Rd, there are a few things we don't know. Had this perp been reported to the police before? By police, are you meaning the campus ones or the real cops?

I repeat, I do NOT condone the actions of Joe Pa or anyone else involved in this.

There are questions that I have which have not been answered by the media frenzy.

Why did the person who SAW the abuse, not report it to the police?

What was the EXACT series of events, and what specifically was/was not done?

What are the Universities rules on reporting sexual abuse?

What are the NCAA's rules on reporting sexual abuse?

What are the rules for reporting a crime on campus? Any of you college grads remember what the rules were when you were in school?

Cooktony, you mean the president of the university who several years ago told Joe to leave and Joe told the president to pound sand? You mean that leader of the university?

It would be nice if you could just post an opinion. Did you really need to address the chef as Cooktony? I'm personally glad Paterno was let go but your comment makes no sense. If Joe was able to tell them to pound sand at that time why didn't he tell them to pound some more sand?

You must be really slow, ken2v has been posting like a pompous ass for quite some time. You just now see it? If you didn't know he was the greatest just ask him, he will tell you.

Pot meet kettle.

To answer your question, he did tell the President that. But this time the Board of Trustees took action. They may or may not have done so anyway, but when he told them not to waste any time on him as he had already decided to retire at years end, they put their foot down and took charge.
