I have a Kindle and then I got a kindle fire. I don't know anything about the nook, but if she just wants it for reading, you really can't go wrong with the kindle. I pretty much just use the Kindle Fire nowadays because I can play games or surf the internet in addition to reading.

You might want to see if you can do a comparison of how much ebooks cost from Amazon vs Barne & Noble
Mrs. Mush likes Kindle (Fire) because she prefers the Amazon interfacing. She says that you avoid taxes with Amazon on books, too.

Edited to add: Mrs. Mush says most public libraries are better suited to serve Kindle users.

This is news to all of me. I use my IPad and IPhone for downloading books.

Hope that helps.
With technology, it's best to follow the leader. I think Kindle is the industry standard/leader so I'd get that.

I think snidely is the industry leader on the. Free for all...
I have a Nook and like it a lot. Every Friday Barnes and Nobles has a free nook book that you can download. Sometimes they're good and sometimes not. They have a big variety. With either you can download from the library. Also, if you have problems, you can go right to Barnes and Nobles for help with the Nook.
I have the cheapest version of the Nook, it's B&W and I love it. It's light weight. I toss it in a crown Royal bag to keep it safe when traveling.

The Nook was the first one to use the library until less than a year ago Kindle didn't want to allow "free" download from the library. I have friends who have the kindle, to me, it isn't as user friendly the nook is more intuitive. The price has come down so much on both I don't think you can go wrong.
Well the kindle fire it is,7" lcd screen, wi fi,8 gig. Has good reviews and looks like what she wants. $187 wth a nice carrying case from amazon, not bad.

As an aside, does anyone else shop amazon very much? I shop with them evry year and have always had stellar service and delivery so it's my favorite mode of shopping. We did have one incident when we got the wrong thing and never did get it starightened out but it was only a ten or fefteen dollar thing so no huge deal.

I've spent thousands on Amazon over the years. I remember when they started and their core business was books. They've always been great to me.
I recommend Kindle Fire with Amazon Prime. I have the old Fire, which is less sexy than the new Fire, but I'm perfectly happy with it. In addition to watching Hulu and Nexflix and flinging birds at pigs, I really like the option of purchasing 99ยข short stories. And last night, while briefly walking down a poorly lit berm into oncoming traffic, I spontaneously used the flashlight app.
