Lion habitat features big cats that worked at MGM

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Dozens of lions that used to entertain tourists at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas now have a new day job.

The Las Vegas Sun reports (https://bit.ly/UsXjFH ) Keith Evans recently opened his Lion Habitat Ranch in nearby Henderson, Nev., about a year after the Las Vegas Strip casino shuttered its own lion attraction to make way for renovations.

Evans has been keeping big cats at his ranch for more than 40 years. He transported them to the MGM Grand each day for 11 years until the closure.

His new attraction includes glass enclosures and safety barriers to accommodate about 40 lions, including seven cubs that were born in November.

The habitat is open weekends. Admission is $20 for adults, while one child under the age of 12 gets in free for each paying adult.

The Lion Habitat Ranch will also do promotional visits with the lions; we were in a slot tournament at the M Resort in Henderson, and they brought a couple of the lions out to the M on each day of the tournament. The trainers and lions were fun to watch.

This is really useful information for those of us who used to enjoy visiting the lions at MGM Grand. Would you mind if I posted your message on another forum?

You actually raise a good question. The old "Marineland" had weeks where they would shut down to the public. The performing dolphins became very depressed. They shipped in schools for free field trips in order for the dolphins to be happy. I wonder if the lions miss the public?

No problem at all, please post it. When I saw the story, I wanted to make sure LVA hadn't aleady posted something.

When I would take first time visitors to the lion exhibit they were almost mesmerized for a half hour or so of just standing there and watching them. I thought it was No. 2 on the Free LV attractions list. I was sorry to see it go.
Thanks.

We have not been to MGM since the exhibit closed. I guess they're doing okay without our patronage.
