Look At How Many Cars Have Passed On!

And I'm talking recently not way back when when Edsel, Desoto, Hudson, Kaiser, American Motors, etc. fell off the face of the earth. I'm talking about the last...what?....5 years where we've lost Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Plymouth, Saturn and Mercury.

I guess Buick could fill in the empty space with Olds and Pontiac where they shared many of the same body parts and options. Dodge and Chrysler fills in for Plymouth models and Ford replaces gaps in the Mercury line. But who takes the place of Saturn who once stood as one of the most revolutionary cars in America.

I remember when Faye and I started our regular strips to Vegas, our car of choice was the Buick Lucerne which Avis was promoting at the time. Well getting a Lucerne was getting next to impossible to get so we settled for a Mercury Grand Marquis, which was another large "boat'' which served our purpose.....meaning that the passenger seat reclined enough for Faye to get her "beauty rest", while I put the pedal to the metal while she was sleeping.

It just seems a shame that we are losing these "classic'' cars for whatever reason. Gone are the days where you would see Lincoln/Mercury on the dealership signs or B_O_P...Buick, Olds, Pontiac. No more 4-4-2, Grand Sport, Grand Prix or GTO. Mercury had the Cougar as its entry in the hot car market. There was another name for this group of hot cars, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is.

Who knows where the car market is going these days, and for sure the foreign cars are making headway into our car market. They seem to have 6 cylinder cars that produce over 300 hp and do 0-60 in less than 6 seconds. WOW!

Gas prices and government imposed mileage averages.
I think that the term you are looking for is "muscle cars." I believe that the 1964 Pontiac GTO is considered the first muscle car, which was a term for a factory car with a large displacement engine fitted into an intermediate sized body (or, at least what was considered intermediate at that time; they would be considered full-sized now). They died out in the early-to-mid 70's due to gasoline shortages, stricter exhaust emission standards and government-mandated use of unleaded fuels.
Hey Bags....don't forget the "Pony" car segment of the 60s and very early 70s. We're talking:

Ford Mustang
Mercury Cougar
Chevrolet Camaro
Pontiac Firebird
AMC Marlin / Javelin / AMX
Plymouth Barracuda
Dodge Challenger

Pontiac always made crappy cars but at least they looked cool.
But then for their last 5 years the cars didn't look cool either.
Gone and not missed.

Ford Pinto

AMC Gremlin

AMC Pacer

The Yugo

What, no Duster? Lol

The Edsel might be coming back . . .

I had a friend in high school who had a pinto. He supped that thing up and actually did a really good job. It looked pretty kick ass too, well as much as a pinto can. Plus that thing would fly, I don't know what kind of motor he put in it and what he did to it but it did haul ass. I also remember it had big wide slicks on the rear and smaller tires on the front. Yea, it was pretty cool.
