magic jack(OT)

Does anyone use this thing for there phone service? we currently use vonage and it works just fine and thats 34 bucks a month. That magic jack contraption is only 20 bucks a year, a bit of a savings for keeping a landline. My neighbor has it and says it works for them, I know they both work on the same concept, use internet bandwith or something like that.

Anyway, does anybody know anything about the magic jack? TIA if so.

Sorry, I was going for additional opinions/experiences about the telephony device, nothing else.

I bought the Magicjack Plus after first seeing it online, TV, and even advertised here on the LVA website. It is worth it and it works fine for the most part. I've cancelled my landline home phone and had that phone number ported over to the Magicjack, however, that was an additional $20 fee which Magicjack doesn't fully disclose upfront but still it was worth it to avoid the hassle of notifying everyone of my new phone number. The Magicjack Plus works off of my router so the computer doesn't have to be constantly on for it to work whereas the previous version of the Magicjack required the computer on to work (fax machine also works). Magicjack has all the different features such as call waiting, caller ID, etc. I use the call forwarding feature which automatically forwards incoming calls to my cell phone. They advertise $19 service fee per year (not per month) which comes out to about $1.70 a month. Actually, it's $29 per year for the service unless you sign up for their 5 years of service for $99, which then comes out to $19 a year. Overall, I've had the Magicjack Plus since the beginning of 2012 and it works fine with the exception that a couple outgoing calls that I've made had dropped after a couple of minutes into the call. I suspect my router lost the connection. I used to pay about $40 a month for the landline phone and after 2 months the Magicjack Plus has already paid for itself. The only beef I have is their customer service only uses chat rooms (no telephone service), and it can take hours to try to resolve issues if resolvable at all. On another forum people have had issues with the device and customer service;

So far mine's has been great and saved me lots of money thusfar.

Magicjack buys and resells phone time. Don't waste your time with it. Likely the Feds/regulators will have them out of business soon.
I use Ooma which is a voip device. It does not require a computer to work. It connects to a router. It costs me $4.50 a month. All you pay for is the taxes that go with a phone line.

It works like a charm and saves me roughly $20.00 a month over Brighthouse phone service. The only downside to any voice over internet (voip) device is if you internet goes down you are without a landline. Also be aware that faxing over voip is hit or miss, mostly miss, so if you do a lot of faxing keep your old phone line.

I rarely use a landline so this works for me.
I have heard that they can get into your computer when you use MJ. However, they have a new service that you don't need the PC.
The latestest news from Magic Jack is that they may be coming out with a wi-fi device. I'm not sure how it'll work but I won't hold my breath for they've made many a false promises before.
