Man vs Food

Hey Everyone

Well after not going to Vegas this year (mainly holidays with the wife and money commitments) next years trip is booked. Well the flights are anyway. Heading over for a week in May. Cant wait.

On the Food Channel in the UK we get a programme called Man vs Food hosted by Adam Richmond - i Dont know if you have it Stateside but i pressume you do. He basically eats his way around America visiting some food challenges in each state.

So I'm watching it last night and see something i've never seen before "Chicken Fried Steak" which is apparently a Southern American classic.

Anyone know where i can find this in Vegas? Never seen it before but just want to try it and see whats it like. Also wheres the best place to get some really big Deli style sandwhiches. I guess like in New York where its basically two slices of bread with a pound of pastrami inbetween.

Thanks

You can order chicken fried steak in almost any standard breakfast diner in Vegas. Its not really something that one place makes better than another. There's not much to making it....its just a battered/ fried cube steak with country gravy on top. I've had one at Blueberry Hill (1 mile off the strip on Flamingo Blvd.) and it was very good...but I'd be willing to bet the diner in your hotel will have them on the menu too.

As for Deli's...there's quite a few. On the strip I know the Mirage has the Carnegie Deli. Everyone raves about it. Personally, I found it to be a little pricey...but they have the big stack sandwhiches like you are talking about. If you are downtown then Binion's Hotel has a good deli too.
Ellis Island has it.

It is a good choice if you are looking to build up your cholesterol numbers
Ahhh pjstroh, my poor misguided friend. While I have never compared the different chicken fried steaks of Las Vegas I can tell you that there are differences.
Perhaps I should take you home to Texas, introduce you to Mother and one of the true edible CF steaks. A poor cut of meat from a rangy old bull who has lost his usefulness. Aged under a couple layers of canvas hanging through the winter in the back of the dairy barn. Cut thin by Mother herself then beat sensless with a cast iron tenderizing mallet, the kind with points all over the head. (It was watching Mother perform this job that kept me in line as a child.) Soaked for a couple of hours in some secret batter that even Mrs. Maria, the family cook, didn't know the recipe for. Pan fried fast, two at a time in a giant skillet. Blotted with a paper towel to call it healthy and served with mashed potatoes.
Well, that did it. I'm homesick. If I leave now I think I can be home by supper.

Yes you can get this " Chicken Fried Steak " in many places, most places call it Southern Fried Steak or Country
Fried Steak. I hope you, the poster, realizes that it is not Chicken in this entree.
Hope this may clear up any question whether it is beef or chicken, if you didn't already know that.
I like it!
The Silverton has one of the BEST chicken fried steak you'll ever eat according to my other half. You can get it at the Sundance Cafe.

as far as delis go, as mentioned, the Carnegie Deli in the Mirage is the absolute best. If you order the "Woody Allen" special, you get one pound of corned beef and one pound of pastrami for about $16. Even though it sounds pricey, figure out what a pound of corned beef or pastrami sells for in a Jewish deli! You're getting two pounds of meat for $16. When it gets delivered to your table, people are lining up to take pictures of the sandwich. One thing you should absolutely order with your meal is a potato knish. They have the best I've ever tasted. The first time we ever ordered that special, it lasted about 4 days, and we were sharing it with all the bartenders. They'll give you extra bread if you take it to go......which you will. Pickles are also out of this world. Real NY style Kosher Dills.
I know it's a chain, but I do like their chicken fried steak and I actually ate one there on Monday for free on Veterans Day. It's called Twin Peaks, kind of like Hooters but a different outfit, kind of lumber jack themed.

The steak is huge and is served with two sides for around $12.00. It's normally two meals for me. But looking at pictures on Google, it appears the size varies by restaurant. In Dallas they cover the plate.

There's one in Vegas at:

Address: 3717 Las Vegas Blvd S #285, Las Vegas, NV 89109
Phone: (702) 795-8946

Menu: twinpeaksrestaurant.com

Go one better and try the chicken fried lobster at Binion's steak house.
Cheers Guys

Exactly the options i was looking for. I dont know why but when I saw it I just knew that Chicken Fried Steak had to be tried on my next trip.

Hoops2 - for that week in Vegas I'm never gonna worry about calories or cholesterol - its part of the fun.

BAGIANT - Woody Allen special sounds exactly what i'm looking for so will give that a go too.

Cowboy Kell - thats exactly the sort of Image I had of this dish after watching the programm - a tradition taste of southern home cooking.

That twin peaks resteraunt looks a good shout - thanks for the link and info.
