May 8th 1945.

The United Nations crushs Nazi Germany and the European half of World War Two comes to a successful conclusion. Celebrations break out everywhere, even though the US is still in an official thirty days of mourning for FDR. England and its commonwealth celebrate this on May 7th( the day the Germans signed the surrender, but America celebrates today as it went into effect on May 8th. Russia celebrates it on May 9th, because they are Russians.

Sometimes you do what you gotta do.

An interesting side note. Not only did General Patton wanted to take Berlin first; he wanted to keep going east. General Patton wanted to take the western allies & use the surviving German units that surrendered to the US/Britain and attack Russia. He said Russia was our next great enemy & since we had the best navy & had a large well trained army already in the field, combined with German troops and equipment we would never have this opportunity again

That would have been great, in theory. In reality, the Soviets outnumbered the Allies by about a ten to one ratio and the American people never would have gone along with it. We still had to deal with Japan and had every reason to suspect that would be an extremely bloody conflict, one we might need Soviet help for.
No nation suffered under the Nazis like Russia, it was the right thing to let them enter Berlin. It also saved tens of thousands of American lives by letting the soviets do it.

If I remember correctly the Germans wanted the Americans/Brits to take as much land as possible knowing that the Russians were looking for revenge. As a result they were surrendering en-mass to the west
