Medical Marijuana

Let me add that during a Christmas party I found out that somebody I know has smoked pot for 40 years. Let me say he is highly motivated, a great parent and very intelligent. I know there are exceptions to everything but he definitely is not your Cheech and Chong stoner.

With the ever increasing "legalization" of marijuana, I wonder what effect this could have upon the thousands of inmates who are in prison for possession.

Hopefully it would result in their release which would save taxpayers even more money.

The biggest opponents of legalizing marijuana are members of the private-incarceration industry that will lose tons of money if all those petty drug users stop getting arrested.

Putting people in jail or prison for marijuana possession is asinine.

Until the laws are changed, this is required by our public civil servants. Or are you saying laws should be selectively enforced - like immigration and the defense of marriage act? The scary part is who selectively decides to enforce which laws upon whom.

Agreed and it would save a ton of taxpayer dollars. I have to laugh in the part of Indiana I live in the local government and law enforcement is always touting their busts of local pot heads as some great triumph of law enforcement meanwhile meth is all over the place. It seems like every hillbilly knows how to make meth in their bathtub, and the people that get addicted to that cause real problems.

Of course he's not saying that.

He's saying the drug laws should be changed to be more just, that we shouldn't have to rely on the mercy of those charged with enforcing the laws to do what's right.

Are you under the impression that every violation of law that comes to the attention of law enforcement is prosecuted to the fullest extent? Because that's hardly the case, never has been the case, and never will be the case.

Laws selectively enforced? How unprecedented. Or not. Have a look - There's a whole website dedicated to dumb laws that do not get enforced across the country.

https://www.dumblaws.com/laws/united-states/nevada

Selective enforcement of laws is not a partisan issue either. Ask your average right winger if we should enforce IRS laws surrounding Republican Superpacs posing as 501c groups. Or if we should arrest people who ordered the torture of captured prisoners from the Iraq War.
I hope jphelan isn't a Virginian, where it's illegal to

* tickle a woman

* swear into a telephone

* own a dildo

* pass a car without first honking

* hunt on Sundays, and

* trick-or-treat.

One has to be profoundly stupid or a member of the Taliban to not appreciate wise, selective enforcement of irredeemably bad laws.
