It was first named Decoration Day, for folks to clean and 'decorate' grave stones of those who died in service to the US, from the Civil War forward. In small towns everyone knew the names and/or family of those lost to war. Parades, picnics, fireworks, etc. were big events. Before air conditioning, TV, Internet.
