MGM to outsource valet parking

billryan - just curious, how much MGM stock do you have?

Snidely333, I can not really argue with your assessment. I guess I am guilty of caring to much about others at times. I am not a valet but I feel sad for the employees that MGM is discarding for a dollar. It is easy to argue for all of these changes for the sake of making a profit. That thread about additional fees and charges would be other money making ideas. Las Vegas used to be the land of the cheap eats and great deals, those days are going away. I hope our tourism does not take a hit.

Frankly, I think the government should outsource more functions as it is more cost effective. Think about it, a government workforce paid with taxpayer dollars beholden to the regime in powers gets union contracts, above market wages, pensions, subsidized health care and if this is not enough they go out on strike. Grass cutters and street cleaners are not "strategic" to the mission of government.

Similarly, valet parking attendants are not "strategic" to casino operations. Why hire dozens of employees with the associated cost and management issues when you can outsource the problem to a company who specializes in these types of services?

If the services delivered are better and at a lower cost, both government and business should outsource the services. However, if the services cannot be delivered by an outside source in a cost effective manner, or the services are "strategic", the services should NOT be outsourced.

The service needs to be even better since it will go from free to $15-$17 per car. MGM will do better but the outsourced valet employees and consumers will not. Like a lot of you are saying on this thread it is all about profit.
I agree with jphelan's position on outsources more government functions. Government agencies only grow and become more obese. Poor employees are never fired. A private company can do more with half of the money vs government.

I'm just wondering if the same MGM valets that choose to go to the new company, are allowed to keep the same percentage of their tips?
Where was the outrage when the casinos outsourced so many restaurants and bars? Where was the sympathy for the poor employees who might lose their jobs or income?

I don't know, post me a link to the thread you started at that time.

I moved here not long ago and this has been a big topic on the local news. Since I am now a resident shoot me for caring.

I don't have a clue why anyone is outraged about any of this.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. I think it is very common for a hotel to lease (and maybe sublease through the original tenant) for restaurants and shops.
It is possible for some of us to have a different opinion without becoming bitter towards each other.
