For a mini trip.
We had other trip plans canceled and access to my in-laws so the wife and I decided to go to Vegas for the weekend.
Made a call to the host at the Golden gate downtown to see what he could do for us. We were set up with a suite from Thursday night till Monday, fully comped. I still can't get over the fact that we are getting comps of this magnitude, our play is just not that high.
We got a late start and arrived at the Golden gate around midnight so we just went to bed. Woo Hoo, big partyers here.
Friday was the usual BJ, LIR and craps. I actually did OK at let it ride with two 3 of a kinds in my hand and one full house. Just when I almost have my wife convinced how terrible the house advantage is on that game one of us wins. I'm flabbergasted, again. However, BJ and craps were not kind to me.
Friday afternoon we went to Franki's Tiki Room on Charleston Ave west of the 15. Its small but very cool. One of the better decorated Tiki rooms I've been to. There are several video poker machines along the bar top but I did not check out the pay tables. We sat at a booth in a dark corner so we could make out. (sorry for the mental picture that must have caused). If you show up wearing an Aloha shirt your first drink is half off. We had a Bearded clam, a Wild Watusi, a Fink bomb and a Polynesian Pile Driver. All of them were very tasty but the sugar cane stick in the pile driver tasted rancid. Good thing we had a driver.
We had shrimp cocktails for dinner, they are no longer 99 cents but they are still good with the best cocktail sauce I have found so far. We gambled the night away in an unaccustomed buzz. Don't remember specifics but we seemed to have the same amount of cash the next morning.
Saturday we went down to El Cortez to play 25 cent roulette. Played for a couple of hours. I broke even and the wife lost $10. Had a great time.
The hucksters were out on Fremont street but not overly so. I read somewhere, maybe on this forum, that if a "street performer" makes you stop walking to look, you owe him a dollar. We never stopped walking.
We went to the Peppermill Fireside lounge for afternoon happy hour. We had never been there. I had heard about it here on LVA and had to check it out. It instantly transported me back to memories of the 70's. My wife thought it was kinda 'retro cool'. She asked "did you really hang out at places like this?" Oh Yeah! All that was missing was people in leisure suits willing to lose money playing backgammon.
After the Peppermill we went to the Top of the World at the Stratosphere. We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing. This used to be one of our favorites in Vegas but I think this might have been our last time. The quality has slowly deteriorated, the wines were mediocre and the prices are still high. However, we will probably continue to visit the lounge for drinks, appetizers and the view.
That night I played Craps, then BJ, then craps, then BJ. All four sessions I lost my buy in. What a bad streak. Time to hit the poker tables. Went to the Golden Nugget poker room and played till 6 in the morning at $1-$2 no-limit with a bunch of drunks. Managed to grind my way back to even for the weekend.
At the Golden Gate they were giving away football squares to the Steelers-Panthers game. We had 5 squares each and were looking forward to our chance at the $2000 prize. But wouldn't you know it, my wife got a call and had to be at an in-person meeting to yell at her associates as soon as possible. Come on!! Its Sunday!!! We have to be present to win....we have 10 squares!!!! Well, if she doesn't keep her clients happy we can't keep coming to Vegas. So, we flew out a day early.
I wonder if our squares hit?
