The Monorail

My sister just told me she read in a casino book that the monorail is going to shutdown 2012. Does anyone have any info on this? Thanks Pattie
The LV Monorail filed for Chapter 11 in January 2010. In November 2011 the Monorail attempted to come out of Bankruptcy but it's plan was rejected. Judge rejects Monorail Bankruptcy plan
There are no plans announced so far to cease operations & the system is running the same as it was before the filing. It still operates between MGM & Sahara. And yes, the Sahara station is still open, even though the Sahara has closed.
Thanks I appreciate the info!
I really think that the monorail will die a slow death if it can't extend the line - ideally to the airport

West side of the strip is well covered with free transport now -
Mandalay to Excalibur
then
Monte Carlo to Bellagio
then
Mirage to TI

I believe that was a prime reason why the judge rejected the deal. Either extend the monorail and make it useful to people...or let it die.

Could you imagine a rail that went from the airport, down LV Blvd to Fremont St, circled back down Boulder Hgwy, and then back to the airport? You wouldn't be the first person to envison that. Just dont tell the taxi cabs - they dont think its such a hot idea...and thats a big reason why it does not exist.
The monorail extension plans DID include going to both the airport and downtown. Funding did not.
And there was indeed vigorous opposition from the taxi end of things - think about the dent that would make in their pockets if people could just monorail instead of getting long hauled to & from the airport by the cabbies?
Sadly, it does not look like those proposed extensions will ever happen, which is really too bad. I'm a huge fan of the monorail. Saves me a fortune in cab fares with a 3 day pass, and I personally don't find the stations to be "too far" from the strip, as I have heard from many detractors. It usually takes me less time to walk through a casino and get onto one of the monorail platforms than it does to work my way through the crowds on the sidewalks just trying to get to the casino/hotel next door! Once you're on board you simply can't beat the couple minutes it takes to get all the way to the next station.

The strange thing is
..... the southern end of the monorail (MGM stop) would probably be about a one mile extension to the airport.

Can it cost that much to extend it such a short didtance?

I have to say we are HUGE fans of the monorail but at some of the stops like at the convention center or harrahs late at night there is not even a guard and that was a bit creepy. I'm a people watcher, I could ride all day. I rode it in 2006 when it started and thought it was great. Not a fan of cabs or their fees.
The last cab I was in smelled, had no A/C, and the driver whined about how tourismis down and how he deserved more tips due to this.
By timewe arrived or hotel we were soaked in sweat from the heat and had to change clothes. At least the monorail had A/c.

The monorail has corny jokes to keep you entertained.
Thing was a train wreck from the start.
