Music

For a while back in the 80's, I lived across the street from one of the hottest dance clubs in town called Meadow Muffins. That was pretty convenient, given that the club served premium liquor in their well drinks at very affordable prices - their well gin was Tanqueray, their well vodka was Smirnoff, their well rum was Bacardi. There were a few nights I just needed to make sure I didn't get run over walking across the street...

The weekend club DJ was very popular local radio DJ. His taste in music was exceptional. He found stuff that was not mainstream and made it mainstream in that other radio DJ's around the country paid attention to his play lists. His DJ name was Red Noize. He was a friend of mine. Cancer took his life a little more than 20 years ago. I really miss him.

The Romantics song "What I Like About You" was always on his weekend play list, and to this day, when I hear it, I just gotta dance!

I don't know why a left-handed drummer would play a right-handed drum set!

"Shout" was also on Red's Friday and Saturday night play list. I think the Isley Brothers originally recorded the song in the mid 1950's. Otis Day and the Knights also recorded the song, and it was featured in the movie Animal House. The crowd at Meadow Muffins weren't wearing togas when this song was playing, but the dance floor choreography was very similar to the movie. That was fun!

Speaking of fun, a “small” group of 1,000 Italian musicians and diehard Foo Fighter fans recently got together in Cesena, Italy (population: just under 100,000) to record a video cover of the Foo Fighter’s 1999 hit “Learn to Fly.” Their goal was to entice the band to alter their schedule and play a concert in Cesena when they tour Europe later this year.

I can’t imagine how long they had to practice to pull this off – think 1,000 performers playing and singing in perfect unison – but their video, to me, is pretty amazing:

Learn to Fly - Rockin 1000 (July, 2015)

The video, which was just posted on July 31, 2015, has gone viral. The Foo Fighters noticed, and have already accepted Cesena's invitation.

If anyone wants to see it, this is the original video for the song:

I know there are a few Rush fans on this board.

I found this pretty impressive. This kid covers all the vocal and instrument parts for Rush's "Freewill" and nails it. I can understand being able to do the guitar and bass parts......but the fact that he can also play the drums at that level is what takes it over the top.

As I wrote in an earlier post, I saw Duran Duran live at Fiddler's Green in Denver. They've done a number of songs that I like, but Hungry Like The Wolf will always be my favorite.
I'm on the hunt, I'm after you!
A two-fer tonight. The first time I heard Orinoco Flow by Enya, I knew I had to buy it. There have been several artists who have covered the song through the years. I'm partial to this live version done by Celtic Woman. It is quite a production!
Sail Away, Sail Away, Sail Away!

Good picks, Bob!

I saw Duran Duran live at The Meadowlands in about ’83 (give or take) when I lived in New Jersey. It was a great show.

Don’t think I’ve ever heard the Celtic Woman rendition of Orinoco Flow. I can see why you like it – it’s very good.

Thanks.

In the movie Animal House the song Shout was being lip synced by DeWayne Jessie playing the role of Otis Knight of the then fictional band Otis Day and the Knights. In the movie Shout and Shama Lama Ding Dong were actually sung by Lloyd Williams. Great songs and performances in a great movie.

After the movie DeWayne Jessie formed a band and toured as Otis Day and the Knights.
Confusing huh?

I bought Marshall Crenshaw’s 1982 debut album on a whim, and liked almost every track on first listen. The music was basically toe-tapping, feel good, Buddy Holly-esque rockabilly. No surprise that Crenshaw was later selected to play Buddy Holly in the 1987 film La Bamba, starring Lou Diamond Phillips as Ritchie Valens.

Unfortunately, subsequent albums were not as well received by the record-buying public, and Crenshaw never quite achieved top-tier name recognition.

Here are two of my favorites from his 1982 debut album:

Someday, Someway

Cynical Girl

My favorite song by The Eagles (and it isn't even close) is Seven Bridges Road. The vocal harmonies are truly a beautiful noise!
