Hey thanks so far everyone, we cannot re load OS due to well everything is slowly going. Our fan sounds like it is going to launch and fly the laptop soon, the keyboard gets reallly hot and it always if on a airflow, the ports to attach things work 25 % of the time and wont charge anythng and the mouse now works 75 % of the time.LOL.

We use for schoolwork, pictures, movies and so on. We like fast, good battery and multiple of things. I used to do alot of writing and was working on a book at one time.

I strongly suggest the next thing you do is a full system back up. Don't risk losing your data while you shop around.

Could be dusty/dirty inside. Maybe undo a few screws and blow some compressed air in a can and see if you can clean it out. But, after 5 years it's probably time for a new one.
I posted on another thread that if I had the money an Apple laptop would hands-down be my choice. That being said I don't have the money so I ended up buyiing an HP. I suggest using edealifo.com to find deals, coupons etc. I ordered my HP directly through HP from the link provided by edealinfo. I should receive the laptop in about another two weeks.
A friend had the same issues with her laptop.. Slowing down, noisy fan, overheating...

Find a computer geek friend or take to a local repair shop to have it cleaned out.

I opened my friends laptop to find several HUGE dust bunnies inside as well a cat hair wrapped around the fans (She has 3 long hair cats)cleaned it all out and replaced one fan that had bad bearing, got part on ebay for $15.00 and her laptop was running great.

The noise that you think is an internal cooling fan might be the hard drive....that was the case with my recently departed Toshiba - it served me well for 7+ years - and the reason it finally died was virus infection, not a hardware failure.

I bought new Toshiba laptop about 3 weeks ago. It is my 6th Toshiba laptop over the last 19 years. I doubt I'll ever buy another brand simply because of my own experience with their machines. Some of my colleagues buy other brands due to expressed appreciation of good customer service. Toshiba may well have excellent customer service, but I can't say for sure...I've never had to use it!

Did you use spyware?
I have AVG and comodo firewall. Plus if you save your documents wont you transfer the virus to your new puter?
Thank you so far, which Toshiba did you get?

I have a HP G62 I bought at staples for $299.00. It does everything I need to do and then some. If your like me 90% of what you do is web related. I had a big, monster 17" sony that cost an arm and a leg. I actually prefer the 15" screen to the big mammer jammer.

At $300.00 I couldn't go wrong.
DonDiego prefers the ruggedness of the classic Osborne. It features dual floppy disk drives.

And in addition to surfing the 'net, one can play video games:

Take a look at the Fry's ad for this weekend. 17.3 8gb for 799.
Here's something for those on a budget or who may want a second PC.

This is a daily deal type site, and this item ends at midnight EST for $199.00 (+$4.99 S & H)

I tried to "Price Match" this with Tiger Direct & CompUSA this morning via telephone. Although they claim on their site that they will price match under their "Best Price Policy", they actually refused me on this deal because "It costs us $250.00 for this unit, and we will not price match if it is below our cost." Even when I suggested I may go to the BBB, etc, they refused. Oh well, I tried.

It is a "basic" laptop, not much hard drive space, and most likely not suited for a "power user", but certainly more than adequate for many of "us", or as a second PC.
