NFL Officiating

The league has been going with replacement officials with mixed results in the preseason. Now it is for real and I am curious on how it will work out.

They were unable to get officials from division 1 (who would have had give up their entire college schedule), so they are using division 2 & 3 officials who are unused to the speed, intensity as well as the complexity of the NFL rules

No problem in last night's game, but I'm sure something will happen this weekend.
There was one play that stood out to me. I don't remember which team it was called on, but a guy just put his hands on a guys back at the end of a play and they called it. I'm guessing the ref was at a bad angle and thought it was a harder shove than it really was. The guy didn't even lose his balance. I don't think the real ref would have called it.

I had an NFL Ref come speak to a quarterbacks club about ten years ago. He said that they realize they could technically throw a flag on virtually every play. He said if an infraction takes place away from the ball and isn't a harsh infraction that many times they will let it go, although they may warn the player that they will throw a flag if they see them doing it a gain.

That play was on a punt; the call was clipping or blocking below the waist (15 yards). It should have been a block in the back (10 yards)
If the fans don't notice the officials, then the officials have done a good job.
If the fans notice the officials, usually the officials have done a poor job & called attention to themselves.
I can almost predict the following:

1. Regular NFL officials will come back in Week 2 or Week 3 at the latest.
2. A couple of bad calls will result which may affect the outcome of a game or more
3. Someone will have a sign or make a statement that the NFL should have kept the replacement refs.
All will be fine as long as they never have to get replacement cheerleaders

Sounds like lots of game delays while reviewing replays and discussions with upstairs about what too do.

When the head official stated "clipping" I told my wife I have not heard of "clipping" being called in the NFL for years. Then they showed the replay and it was "block in the back". It made a 5 yard difference in the penalty. Funny the wife and I noticed that same call. I really thought for the most part they did okay last night.
