Try and name a single, result-influencing thing that has ever happened in the first 40 minutes of an NBA game. "Ooh, lookie, he made a two-point basket!" "Wow, our team will almost certainly win, our player just made a three point basket here in the opening minutes of the second quarter!" Can't be done.
In baseball, a guy can hit a first inning slam. In football, a touchdown really is a big deal, no matter when it happens. In hockey, you'll win 80 percent of the time if you score the first goal.
In basketball, until late in the game there's no single play that a player can make that can fill fans with the rush of an expected victory.
Having said that, hoops is still more exciting than the first 95% of races at Daytona and Talladega zzzzz.....
