Going back a few years ago CalTrans widened the "merge" ( I-5 and I-805) into the largest freeway in the world......an amazing 21 lanes wide for both the north and south lanes. But taking Faye back from the hospital in LaJolla tonight during rush hour I couldn't believe my eyes that ALL lanes were bumper to bumper both ways.
Traffic since last week has been incredible with bumper to bumper traffic starting on Thursday and continuing through Saturday. Then Sunday comes, and people start heading home so the northbound lanes are jammed from Camp Pendelton down to Del Mar a distance of 30 miles. I just don't understand why people want to come to San Diego and put up with the traffic even with all the attractions San Diego has to offer. I would rather drive to Vegas than put up with all this traffic on weekends.
Maybe it just happens to be the "perfect traffic storm" this week. After all, the races have started at Del Mar, and Comic Con happens to be in town. Combine those with families taking their normal summer vacations, and Voila, a tremendous mess on the freeways. Since Faye was in the hospital since last Tuesday, I've had the horror of fighting this traffic both ways. Fortunately, with all my driving experience in North County, I've learned many shortcuts that get me off the freeways and on to the back roads to avoid all the congestion.
So people, if your thinking of driving down here from the LA. area or places up north, schedule your trips at 5 or 6 am and you can thank me later. Or better yet, stop coming to San Diego and go to Vegas.
