Obama picks centrist high court nominee; Republicans unmoved

Unbeleivable. What a bunch of assclowns to not even hold a hearing on the guy. This is going to hurt the GOP big time, they already look bad enough. I think it'll just reconfirm that congress, well senate, can't get anything done and really piss off voters. Like their not very happy as it is. At least hold a hearing on the guy sheesh.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama selected Merrick Garland for the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday, choosing a centrist judge meant to win over recalcitrant Senate Republicans whose leaders wasted no time in spurning the Democratic president.

A bruising political fight is brewing over the nomination, which also promises to figure in the already contentious campaign ahead of the Nov. 8 U.S. presidential election. The Republican-led Senate's leaders have vowed not to hold confirmation hearings or an up-or-down vote on any Obama nominee.

Garland, 63, was picked to replace long-serving conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, who died on Feb. 13. A Chicagoan like Obama, he serves as chief judge of the influential U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and is a former prosecutor who in the past has won praise from both Republicans and Democrats..."
"..Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky swiftly reiterated that the Senate will not consider the nomination by the president. A McConnell spokesman said the senator had spoken by phone with Garland and would not hold a "perfunctory meeting" with him.."
"..John Cornyn of Texas, the second-ranking Senate Republican, added, "This person will not be confirmed, so there's no reason going through some motions and pretending like it will happen, because it's not going to happen."

The Senate will not officially recess the rest of this year to prevent this. No play time for them.

We shall see.

Interestingly enough, even with a Trump a win, they could confirm the guy if the Democrats take the Senate (conventional wisdom) because the new Senate is sworn in before the new President.
Judge Garland is NOT a centrist, by any stretch of the imagination.

But yes, I believe procedure should be run.

That IS what Obama wants......

If they just say no and actually stand by it, they fare far better. Of course Obama will throw race in there somewhere.....

There are worse choices available, . . . like anyone The Hillary is likely to nominate.

However, one can expect the National Rifle Association to oppose him based upon his apparent position in support of the District of Columbia in Parker v District of Columbia, addressing the District of Columbia banning firearms; this case became District of Columbia v. Heller when it went before the Supreme Court which overturned the ban.
Anyone who uses the fabricated word "assclown" is an assclown.
