Cars and trucks are about the most government subsidized things on earth. Those two free government supplied parking places in front of your house for example, plus for most of us, lots of free parking around our towns. Not to mention the tax breaks given to oil companies. Most gas taxes only pay for a fraction of the cost of maintaining roads and very little of the cost of acquisition. And when property is converted into road it is condemned - meaning property taxes are no longer owed by anyone. Meanwhile, private light rail competitors have to continue paying taxes on their property - that's a multi-billion dollar subsidy of car driving right there.
How much smaller could our armed forces be if we weren't so concerned about oil? How many trillions of dollars could we spent on that government subsidy? And how many young men would still be alive if we didn't fight over oil? If the US hadn't supported every oppressive murderous regime that sat on top of a pile of oil, how many fewer anti-American terrorists would there be right now? During the first several decades of the automobile age, when unregulated tailpipe and refinery emissions were sickening and killing people, the oil companies and the auto industry fought every effort to change things, didn't they?
If no one in your household drives, your rent or mortgage is probably around 15% higher because car-centric zoning laws that require you to have a garage, driveway, and adequate street parking. I'm not saying those zoning laws are bad; parking wars need to be avoided. But lots of non-drivers subsidize drivers every time they pay for housing.
And then there's the police, fires, emergency, and hospital expenses created by automobiles. Living in a rural area, where you are pretty much forced to spend a long time driving, is about as deadly as living in our most crime-ridden cities. Yeah, that's how dangerous - and expensive - driving really is. And long commutes have been linked with divorce and spousal abuse. Oh, and climate change.
Ten dollars a barrel probably won't make a dent.
