Definitely a "Life's Hard, but it's Harder if You're Stupid" moment.

I have shared this one before. Some years ago, i was playing blackjack at a local casino. It was a $25 double deck table. The table is pretty full. The dealer deals and her up card is an 8 or something. I know it was not a bust card and I know it was not a face. The guy in the 5th spot starts to signal to split his 2 face cards. I guess he must have reacted to the gasp of horror that came from the rest of the table. Because he suddenly wants to hit his 20. The dealer asks him if he is sure. He says yes. She lets him know that unless he draws an Ace, he will bust and again asks him if he is sure. He says yes. Then she finally calls a suit over for the guy to confirm in front of her supervisor that he wants to hit his 20. And she deals him a 2 and he busts. The rest of the table cashed out and fled immediately after the hand was finished.

The guy didn't appear overly drunk, and even if he was, he had plenty of chances to back out of making this stupid hit

Why would the rest of the table "flee." As I understand the math of BJ at a table, there is no predictabliity in the "incorrect" action by one player effecting the success, or lack there of, of other players at the table. And, while a specific decision may result in the dealer not busting---for example---in one hand, it is statistically neutral over the long run and is just as likely to hurt the dealer in the next example. I think that "fleeing" a table with an incorrect player simply shows lack of understanding of those who flee.

Was sitting next to a Asian older man-- not sure if he spoke or understood English.. playing STP DDB VP
He got dealt quad aces WITH A KICKER and was holding, unholding them so I "tried to help" w/ a gasp of" OH NO!/DON'T!"-- he finally settled on holding them all ( Noahcat swipes sweat from her brow)
I saw later on he often held/unheld his cards with winning hands.... this is when I gave up helping.

his younger daughter came by and we had a chat. She questioned him. Turns out he was "fooling the machine into thinking he didn't know what he was doing, hence increasing his chances for better drawn hands IF THE MACHINE DIDN'T THINK HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING.."
Dumbest thing I ever saw was a woman playing a single line on a 50 line penny machine.

Casinos are full of these people. Cruise ships seem to be the worst since people just happen to drop in after a show, etc. with no idea.

Worst one I recall was at a self-serve soft drink fountain, man filled-up a coin bucket and walked away chugging.

let me see if I can explain. I, too, am usually one who doesn't pay attention to what other gamblers are doing. I certainly don't watch other people play VP. When I play VP, I pretty much watch my own screen. And I don't leave a table or cause a scene just because someone hits a 14 vs a dealer 5. But this guy's hitting on a twenty (not an A,9 20, but a hard 20) move was just so unbelievably stupid, that I wanted to be anywhere this idiot was not. Immediately. My brain was having trouble processing what I had just witnessed. I can't, of course, speak for the rest of the table

Barbary Coast BJ table...saw a guy double down on his 16 against the dealers face card. Dealer called floor as this was such a funky play. Guy drew a five for 21 of course. We were flabbergasted.

Years ago when I used to go on these "up and backs" out of LAX, I was playing BJ at the now defunct Maxim Hotel.

All of a sudden there was a big commotion coming from the slot area. Seems like a husband and wife were playing side by side slot machines, and the woman hit the jackpot. Only problem was, she only had one coin in instead of the 3 coins needed for the BIG Jackpot.

Well things finally got under control, until 15 minute later. Now an even louder commotion started, but this one was even worse than the previous one. I ran over to take a look at what was happening. When I got there, I could see the husband have the wife bent over backwards on the machine she was playing, and was strangling her to death. Apparently the woman had hit the same jackpot AGAIN, and even though she had hit a mini jackpot just 15 minutes earlier, HAD ONLY PLAYED....you guessed it....ONE COIN AT A TIME!!!

They apparently needed money desperately, and his wife just blew any chance they had of getting out of the hole!

Your last line is what you got out of it?His wife blew their chance?
Him bending her over backwards on a slot and strangling her is ok though?
You do hate women.

I get it. He was at 16 and he knew he was not going to hit more than once, so the DD is the perfect way to get a gamblers rush going.
I often DD my 12 against the dealer's 2 for the same reason.
Another reason someone will do this if it is a local casino with low table limits.
