Office guide to gift exchanges at office Christmas parties

Every year we have a firm Christmas party somewhere. Each person is asked to buy a gift around $20 and wrap it. All of the gifts are brought to the party. There will be some kind of random number drawing for who will go first. The first person will go pick a gift (usually they will know which present is the present they brought). After the gift is opened, the second person will go. If the second person likes the gift that the first person opened, then they can take that gift and the person who had his gift taken can go select another gift. We put the rules, that the person who had his gift taken, cannot immediately choose to take his or her gift back that was just taken. We also put a limit of three times that a gift can be taken. This process goes on until all gifts have been chosen.

Here are my observations:

Don't select the big gift. More times than not, it is something that has been regifted and isn't that great. I got a green drinking glass set one year. I was fortunate when someone took it from me because his daughter just entered college and she needed drinking glasses. The other big item I got was a crystal vase for holding flowers or other things. While that sounds nice, it was too over the top in the way it looked.

If you are male, go for the package or gift bag that looks like it has booze. You usually can't go wrong with a bottle of vodka or wine. While it may not be the best gift at the party, it is at least usable.

If you are female, go for the small gift bag that comes from a nice mall store This is usually a gift certificate.

Beware of packages that look like music cd's. The music will never be to your tastes.

If you get a gift you want to keep keep it somewhat out of site, so that it is less likely to be chosen, if someone is looking for something.

If it is a gift you hate keep it out front where it can be seen. You may have to throw in an extra bribe to get it taken away from you.

Just remember. Stay sharp, and try to guess what is in packages before choosing them.
We do the white elephant exchange every year. It's a lot of fun. I ended up with a shih tzu figurine. ( I have shih tzus). My hubby got a nice pen drawing that my boss does. (he's gotten awards for these).
Further tips-

If the gift was brought by Rizzo, snag it asap! He has been on fire and likely spent more than $20

If the gift was brought by Don Diego, the "third person" should rightfully get stuck with it.

If the gift was brought by Singer, it will be a box of hot air but worth a million dollars

If the gift was brought by Money LA, it will be full of ads to his website

If the gift was brought by Bagaint, you may need to hide it from your other gifts, sanitize it, and pay to have it repaired multiple times

Oh my frigin' god, that is the funniest post of the year---hell, of the decade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bravo Johnzimbo, Bravo sir...
Note: any Hustler gift cards should be covered and labeled as an Aspen Dental gift card.

It's not the gift, it's the packaging.

Get an empty Nintendo, X-box, IPhone 4S, IPad, or Laptop Computer box, and wrap your Office exchange gift in that! (Add appropriate weight, bricks, telephone book, whatever, plus your "gift". )

Than enjoy yourself as everyone goes for the "swap".

A gift card for an electronics store if using a "technology" carton, etc.

Instant Classic!

"Dirty Santa" has always been a hit at our studios. Really brings the staff together. Someone always wraps up a brick and same guy somehow picks it almost every year.

Lots of fun.
