Gold Spike, though no longer a casino. is now one of the best. A great downtown bar. And a big success.

They have small concerts in there now. Last visit people were lined up down the block trying to get in. Parking gargaes were chargin $10. I dont know who was playingin there but it must have been a pretty big name

There's a big patio out back connected to what used to be a parking lot. Easily big enough for a decent sized bar concert. Last Christmas they had an ice rink there, not this year. Plans were to add more hands on games such as over sized "Jenga" using big foam blocks and a life size "Operation" game.

We only go during the day. Employees say it gets crazy packed late Friday and Saturday nights.

We went to Gold Spike during the day. It was dead inside and the security guard was none too keen to let us in past the stoop. He said we could look around but there wasn't much going on and it would be better if we came back later. I'm glad to hear it's doing well.

That's strange and a little disconcerting. Its a Bar. There's no cover charge that I'm aware of. Why would they not want you to go in??
We usually go during the day. Get a drink at the bar. Sprawl out on the giant couch/bed and play backgammon.

Ive never understood the appeal. If you want a dive there are plenty other places that have much better gaming available.

Hey PJ, when you get a chance, could you list the other dives that have much better gaming available. I have a 4 day trip coming up early next year and I would like to check them out. I will have a car so I can travel off strip. Thanks a bunch !

There's way too many to list.

I guess everyone has their own definition of a "good dive". Mine would be: low limit gaming, player friendly rules, and good cheap eats to spend comps at." That makes almost everything on the strip off limits with the possible exception of Casino Royale.

If I had to list my absolute favs it would be:
Downtown: El COrtez. Really generous comps and awesome gaming. Roulette has 25 cent chips. $3 craps with 10x odds . Plenty of full pay VP. Their steakhouse is now closed but the diner is pretty solid.

Henderson has the Water Street casinos which are great for low limit fun: El Dorado, The Emerald Club, the Rainbow place. ...El DOrado frequently has steak/lobster dinners for cheap. Don't expect a 5 star meal but its as good as anything you get at Red Lobster.

Henderson also has some great places on Boulder Highway: Jokers Wild, and Skyline. Jokers WIld offers craps for a dollar. SKyline has full pay VP with progressives, $1.99 shrimp cocktails, and a diner that serves up an edible Prime Rib for $7.99.

And one of the best diners in the city is hidden away inside of Jerry's Nugget just north of downtown. Their dessert carousel is enough to break the most disciplined dieter.

PJ - That is a good list of the places I frequent - near the strip you could add Ellis Island and I wouldn't leave out Long Horn and Big Horn for their liberal blackjack rules and modelo negra!
Best thing about O'Sheas was they had a Dunkin Donuts outlet. Then Sam's Town got one and it didn't matter.
