OT My emergency room "doctor bill"

If we'd eliminate the parasitic for profit insurance companies that take a 1/3 of all health care dollars off the top and provide no health care costs would drop drastically. The government administers medicare with a 3% overhead, but for-profit health care companies think they are entitled to 30% for doing the same thing.

Canada ain't so bad afterall. Holy cow, we hear about this stuff occasionally and it boggles our liberal minds.

How a people that live in such a great and prosperous country (relatively speaking) could potentially be left financially destitute over an illness in the family is borderline barbaric IMHO.

Our neighbours to the south with adequate medical insurance coverage are very fortunate, as for the others, not so much.

Please forgive my ignorance for the question but it is a legitimate one from someone who doesn't know any better. Are there people there (U.S) that actually don't sleep well at night thinking that they or a family member better not get sick because of what it could do to them financially? (if so, that's some crazy sh$t man)

Canadien health care is great as long as you don't need it:

Emergency room waits - 6 hours
Hip repalcement - 43 weeks
MRI - 2 weeks
Surgery - 4 weeks
see a specialist - 4 weeks

I would say some of those waits are not too unlike some of ours. Some of the US ER's have wait times like that. I have waited 4 weeks for a surgery before and some specialists take longer than that to get into, most often do when you are a new patient.

Hey if we pay about 52% of our income to the FEDS maybe we can have free health care like the canucks up north!

Now thats some funny stuff hoops!!!!Obviously you must be a Canadian because you know so much, but I'd love to know where you are living so I don't move there.

I have 2 kids, both in sports and back in the day I played competitive football/hockey track etc. I have had numerous broken bones/strains other ailments as have my kids. I ,or my kids have NEVER in probably 20-30 visits to emerg. ever been anywhere even close to a 6 hour wait. (my longest was 3hrs, I had a fish-hook in my thumb once while teaching the kids (not very well I might add) how to fish. There were others in the room coming in at various times with much more serious injuries. Of course here in Canada, those in greater need get served first regardless of arrival time. We're good with that.

I once was admitted to hospital for a week. Tons of tests, saw 3 specialists. Didn't pay a penny.

I have been referred to specialists in addition to the above. Once while in emerg. I had 3 doctors trying to diagnose a knee injury. I refused to allow them to put me "under" for a stress test. They said well then you'll need to wait for a specialist. I said fine, I'm not goin anywhere. 2 hours later I had seen the specialist and had a ankle to hip cast on and was out the door.(vs a potential surgery) I have seen specialists 3 other times as has my son. No wait was ever over 3 weeks. Obviously non-life threatening injuries but beyond the scope of the family doctor.

Glad u mentioned the hip replacement. Just so happens my sister had it done. She had to wait a total of 25 weeks to have the procedure done. She has a friend at work who also needed to have a hip replaced. This is many years after my sister had hers done. She called her doctor for this other lady to see if he could help. The ladys hip replacement was done 3 weeks later. Free is good though I'm guessing for a non-life threatening surgery that could wait. For some people though I'm sure the money would be well spent to get the surgery done faster. The pain for some is unbearable I'm sure. (umm, if they have the cash that is)

I am a Lions (NFL) season ticket holder. I bought a medical ins. plan good for a year for anywhere in North America through CAA (our version of AAA) for 135 bucks or so for 2 people just in case something happened and I couldn't get back over the border.

One time in a bar for pre-game drinks we were talking to some guys and when they found out we are Canadians there were a ton of questions revolving around our medical system and tax structure(35% tops in US / Canada 29% plus 11% provincial rate for Ontario tops (difference 5% at highest rate). The things they were saying were very consistent with the things you mentioned re: wait times etc. I was amazed at the stuff those guys were led to believe, not as amazed however as they were at what the truth was. Choose your own doctors? Of course. Pay the hospital or doctors directly NOTHING? , of course. Wait times 6-8 hrs? seriously, we couldn't stop laughing. But you already know that being Canadian and all. I guess my experience throughout my entire life and that of everyone I know are anomolies. Just lucky I guess. It's possible.

Did I mention I have never had to think about whether or not I could afford to go or to take my kids to the hospital?

Didn't wanna start a war or anything over it, but the difference between what some people(and some politicians) would want you to believe and what reality is (at least my experiences) are sometimes two entirely different things.
I was quoting statistics from your government.
HI, ALL. I was in VEGAS last september [For the BARRETT JACKSON AUCTION] & went home [ N.Y. ]
on OCTOBER 1st. While in VEGAS i found myself getting out of breath very easily and on my first day home i got real sick. Thinking that i had a bad cold or the Flu i languished in bed for a week and only decided to see my doctor after it took me a full 1/2 hour to get dressed one morning. The doctor promptly sent me to the hospital for tests etc. I spent 1 night [24 hrs ] in that hospital before being transferred to another
hospital that specializes in Heart problems. was there for 14 days ANYWAY long story short
Hospital 1 = 18,000.00 +
Hospital 2= 230,000.00 +
total so far a little over 1/4 of a million $'s
[Heart valve repair]. The GOOD NEWS is that I am coming back to VEGAS next TUESDAY!!!!
I hope the SLOTS are loose!!!!

WOW...enough said, that should end the debate. VERY HAPPY you are better now..ENJOY your trip, sure sounds like you deserve it.

PS- would love to see that Barretts/Jackson live some day
The people that are so worried about Obamacare have probably never had a hospital bill like that. I work in a hospital and I am still amazed at what healthcare costs. I am not a high paid professional. I make probably what others in my profession (accounting) make. But I see what the healthcare professionals make and sometimes it makes my jaw drop. I also see what we have to put out for a piece of equipment and understand why we have to charge so much.

Something has to be done, there has to be a breaking point somewhere. At least the current administration is trying to do something. The party in power is just trying to undo everything they are trying to do. Oops, sorry, got a little political there. I'll stop now.

Don't confuse us with facts. We like our rhetoric and bluster.

I live in Michigan and I hear that stuff all the time. People from Canada have to come to Michigan for care! People act like that's a bad thing. Your health service doesn't have enough specialist, sends them here, and still pays for it. I can't go to the next county over and get care
"Something has to be done, there has to be a breaking point somewhere. At least the current administration is trying to do something. The party in power (THAT WOULD BE THE DEMOCRATS? SINCE THEY CONTROL THE SENATE & THE PRESIDENCY) is just trying to undo everything they are trying to do. Oops, sorry, got a little political there. I'll stop now. "

obamacare is modeled after the Mass plan which is broke because the costs are coming in higher than planned. This is what we have to look forward to; except with a lot more zeros attached.

The true problem with medical costs is that 5% of the US population consumes 39% of the costs. Until we get our arms around that issue (which brings in a whole ethics problem) our medical costs will continue to grow.

Let me see if I have this right ?

14 days in the hospital = $230,000
(includes crappy food, a nurse to check for 5 minutes every hour 24/7, a heart monitor and one operation.)

14 day stay at the Wynn @ $500/day = $7000 (includes gourmet meals , limo to & from hospital) )
3 nurses (8 hr shifts /24 hr availability in room) @ $1000/day = $14,000
Heart Monitor rental @ $1000/day = $14,000
Total (so far) = $35,000 (MAX !!)
Remaining monies for ONE operation (4 hrs. MAX) = $195,000

Pretty sure I could find a doctor (& team of assistants) for 4 hours for THAT kind of dough ???
THAT's absolutely ludicrous !!

Somebody is milking the system just a tad....don't you think ???
