OT My emergency room "doctor bill"

When my sisters son was born, her husband delivered it in her hospital room. They were charged all kinds of things they thought were not relevant. But, they were available if needed and that is why the charges are there.
Geeze as a RN I "WISH" I could only spend 5 minutes a hour at your bedside. I am there for 12 hours and another 2 sometimes just doing paperwork for all the stuff I could NOT get done , since I was hense AT THE BEDSIDE. I carry a load of 4-9 pts.
I go home exhausted, with no lunch most the time and I only sit down when driving.
Interesting topic anyway.

When my son was born the hospital had to call in a neonatolgist as he was an at risk newborn. The insurance company denied the charge for "consultation" of $700. Unless the 3 minutes I chatted with the doctor while she did some paperwork for other patients counts as a consultation, I never had one. Since the insurance company said the claim was denied the doctor sent the bill to me. I also denied its validity. They kept sending bills. I kept denying them. After 1 year they cut the amount in half, said they would offer me a 50% courtesy. I said I wasn't paying them anything as my insurance company said it was not a valid charge. After another year they gave up on me and gave me a 100% courtesy.

Don't give in! Fight the system!

In the meantime, it goes on your credit report.

I assume the "5 minutes" thing refers to my comment.
I am NOT saying a nurse doesn't work for the whole time he/she is there. I am however, saying that any time I've ever been in the hospital I might see a nurse for 5 minutes an hour when they check in on ME.
I have NEVER had a nurse spend an entire shift at MY bedside. You may be available but not with me (or any other patient) for the whole time. Yet the hospital says they get paid by me AND the other 40-60 patients in the ward as if you were there all the time.
Not saying in ANY way that YOU are overpaid....as I am pretty sure you're not making over $40/hr .
Thus 3 nurses x 8 hours x $40 = $960 /day (My original estimate $1000)

This thread amply demonstrates that the way that America goes about distributing health care is terrible. We can do a lot better.

I think the ACA is a big step in the right direction. We should give it a chance. We've invested in the skills, and we spend plenty. We just need to match needs and resources better.

Hey PearlGuy, you would actually be pretty shocked the length of time I spend with a pt in a hour, between checking on them, medications, calls to the room, and so on. Do I spend the WHOLE shift, no, but I spend quite a bit. If you are getting blood, I get to be there 30 minutes alone with you while my other pts wait and so on. Even if I made $40.00 a hour I deserve it, sorry but that is how it is. Do all, no as I know what you are saying I know some who go see them and never get up except for a med pass.
I wish we had a 4 to 1 pt ratio but that will not happen, only if in ICU. I give 110% to my pt, I go without most of the time, including water.
I am there the whole time aside from going to the bathroom for 40 pts. I answer my pts and every other on the ward, plus I play lab and transporter too.

My girlfriend recently had an emergency hospital visit here in Texas. She has Blue Cross. We failed to ask the Doctors if they were "in the network". The dental surgeon removed one tooth. He was NOT "in the network", His bill was $2500 which we will have to pay.

This year we had a bad run on hospitals both of us had two emergency ER situations. Out of pocket cost $30000.

We will be paying small payment for some time!!
