outrageous flight prices!

Does anyone know why the flight prices for the first week-end in May are so riduculous? I know the rising cost of fuel will bump up the cost some what, but all I can find from Detroit are 400+ flights that aren't even straight through! I'm used to flying for around 150.00 round trip so the thought of paying almost 500 bucks for a flight is killing me. I'm trying to decide whether to wait and hope they come down or use frequent flyer miles. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether they will come down or keep going up?
Any info would be great - Thanks!
Have you considered flying out of Lansing on Sun Country?

You can depart one way on May 1st for $99. They haven't released their schedule yet past May 2nd it doesn't look like. Good Luck!

My experience is the earlier you book the cheaper it is. Since the time you want to leave is only a month away the prices are higher. I usually find that booking about four to five months ahead of time you get the best deals.

Hope this helps.

I cant agree more. I was looking back in Jan and the vacation packages were less then booking the flight only. I always use comp rooms but not this time. I booked a package out of phil, PA from US Air for our May trip. 8 of us booked up 4 packages and two of the guys used flight miles. They got first class tickets for 45000 miles round trip. We paid $453.00 per person for 4 nights at the Flamingo , direct flights with good flight times ( I hate Red Eye flights ) Same package today is over $800.00 per person. All I can say is book early, and lock it up when you see a good price. I miss the $99.00 fares on Southwest out of Phil. I Have not seen those fares in my area for a long time now.

I booked out of Detroit a couple of weeks ago to leave on 5-21 and paid 355 for roundtrip on Delta. Try checking the sites late Tuesday or early Wednesday mornings. I was checking the sites on Sunday and flights posted were double the price.
Have you tried priceline? I used them 2 yrs ago and they were very reasonable. I put in what I wanted and got great prices. I realize the difference with airfare from 2 yrs ago but none the less it might be cheaper. They block off certain amount of seats and need to fill them.

Try Flint also they will have a stop but might be cheaper.
agreed- flights from JFK NYC are $578.00 RT..and UP!!!!
I'm loking for july/august
Before this year, I always got a steal for $330.00 or under
phooey
Though I would rather blow my money in Las Vegas the air fare thing has gotten me fence sitting. I may just go local, well sort of, and skip the aggravation of flying for a while and see how things shake out.

Right now, Jet Blue is around $450, but between now and then, I'm certain they will dop at least $100. nice thing about JB is if you book today and the price drops, you can request a credit for the difference.

US Aiirways usually has good deals on vacation packages and I usually use them too. In Febuary I stayed 5 nights at the Four Queens and got airfare and hotel for 300 bucks flying out of DFW.

About three weeks ago though I got airfare only on American for 235 dollars for September and I will use comped rooms.
