Poker odds question

My first time playing, I was cruising the floor looking for something to play( Had my ass handed to me at BJ) , the LIR table was empty and sat down. I got extremely lucky that week playing, several FH's, two 4OAK's and a mini royal. Got dealt QKA of diamonds. I couldn't lose. Not until next trip anyway, lost my butt and pretty much have since. I still enjoy playing but it is definitely a losing game. If i'm not mistaken, that was the first time I was paid in blackies which made my day.

Yeah I mostly a VP player, but sometimes I just want to hold cards in my hand so I either spend an hour on LIR or cheap Hold 'em games. I understand the suicide prevention argument (lol) but I still can't get past the numbers on how many of those $1 bets I will have made by the time I hit the royal. :-)

Excellent, thanks so much. I like playing LIR for a break from VP once in a while, but I always end up sitting next to some chump who questions why I don't play the bonus bet of $1, where I can win and extra 10k when I get the royal flush. Ummmm, because when I do get that royal flush and win that extra 10k, I'll have already spent 650k getting there. I just wanted to have the number in my head

That's a very good answer and is the "right" play......well, maybe not playing LIR would be the "right" play. Anyway, I have never seen a royal flush on LIR. Queries to dealers about seeing one usually brings the answer "some other dealer dealt one a year or so ago..."

The wife plays ALOT of LIR, I sometimes play with her. We both play the dollar bonus as a matter of suicide prevention. If we ever DID hit the royal without the $1 out there it would send me into a fit of depression.

There's many other hands that the bonus pays on or has that changed? It hadn't at Harveys in Tahoe a few months back anyway and that's a harrahs prop.

They're still there. Pair of 10's or better is even money
two pair is $2 3OAK is $3
Straight is $25 Flush is $50
Full house is $75 4OAK is $150.....From memory, might be off.
True but the house edge on those bonus bets (according to the link that jphelan sent me to) is still between 13% and 35% depending on the pay table. Way to high. I think the edge on just playing the three main bets is much lower.

Very true. I think the edge on LIR itself is %3.5 with perfect play, which shouldn't be too hard.

Yes, 3.5 is right. It's pretty much the same on 3-card poker, BTW. And the strategy on that is simple. Stay on Q-6-4 or better.
I wish you hadn't told me of the %13+ on the bonus. Just found out I'm going to Vegas tomorrow for one night. Will most likely play a little LIR.
Yeah as I said, the house advantage on the bonus bet can be anywhere from 13% to 35% depending on the pay table. Way too high for me.

But hey, have fun!

I'll be in Reno in about 10 days. Gonna play some there. :-)

I think the mini RF paid 300-1 the time I hit it, that was at the IP about 12-15 yrs ago.
Live from Vegas!!

I just lost $50 at LIR, Yes I was playing the bonus. I could have played one more hand if I had not been playing it. That last hand would probably have been a mini royal.

I'm headed to the poker room.
