I don't find that the rental car taxes and fees imposed at McCarran are out of line compared to what's collected at other airports in the country. It's not low, but it's not high either.
Rental car rates in Las Vegas are much lower than average, since so many renters don't drive very far. And so, yes, as a percentage of the total bill, taxes and fees may appear disproportionately high: the $3.75 daily facility fee is a fixed amount, not a percentage of the low rental rate.
On a recent trip to McCarran, looking at my receipt I paid $9.10 a day in taxes and fees on a three days rental with Hertz.
According to a report cited in Forbes, Chicago's airports have the highest daily rental car tax, at $13.95 a day. So if you're in Chicago and upset about Las Vegas' rental car taxes, you really need to realize that the airports in your area are being tougher on renters from Vegas than they're being to you. And I see Indianapolis just upped its own rental car taxes 13%.
New York, Boston, Seattle, and Portland are also rough on renters, all charging the average renter $9.50 to $13.50 a day.
I think Las Vegas rental car taxes get a bad rap. They're not low, but they're not unusually high either, and I think the underlying rates are much lower than in most places, making the overall cost of renting a car in Las Vegas relatively affordable.
